Linux From Scratch

LFS EXTON systemd – a live installable Linux system built from Linux From Scratch (which can run on ALL computers) with LXQt 2.4.0 and kernel 7.2.5-amd64-exton ::: Build 260925

NEWS 260927
I’ve uploaded a new version of LFS EXTON today with support for Netflix in Firefox. Netflix needed (most importantly) the package FFmpeg, which wasn’t installed in version 260925. I’ve kept the ISO name lfs-exton-64bit-systemd-lxqt-refractasnapshot-3060mb-260925.iso so download links won’t break. Watch a screenshot when Netflix is running with excellent video quality.

LFS EXTON Linux live System
is built using Linux From Scratch 13.1 and Beyond Linux From Scratch 13.1 (BLFS).

ABOUT Refracta Snapshot in Build 260925
Refracta Snapshot can be started from the menu. The config file is /etc/refractasnapshot.conf. There you can change where you want your ISO after the remaster process is ready. You can for example change from /root/snapshot to /mnt/sda3/snapshot and /root/work to /mnt/sda3/work. That can be useful if you want to use Refracta Snapshot while running LFS EXTON live from a USB stick. Change everything to your liking. Then just fire up Refracta Snapshot and wait a few minutes. Your new ISO will be ready in /root/snapshots. Watch this screenshot when Refracta Snapshot has started. The whole thing is so simple that a 10 year old child can do it!
NOTE: As you can see the app believes that UEFI is disabled. Don’t worry. I have fixed that issue. The whole thing is so simple that a 10 year old child can do it!

ABOUT Refracta Installer
I finally made Refracta Installer to work in LFS EXTON! Now you can install LFS EXTON to hard drive like any other Linux distribution. Just start Refracta Installer from the menu and follow the instructions. Watch this screenshot.
NOTE: You should create the install partition in advance. Use GParted for that.

BUILD your OWN Linux system

You can also just use LFS EXTON Live System as build environment when building your own Linux system from scratch.

INSTALL LFS EXTON to a USB stick
Install the ISO file to a USB stick with Rufus  in Windows. It will look like this.

LOGIN to LXQt
When the boot process is ready you will automatically be logged in to LXQt as root. The password for root is root##. (If you should ever need it).

INSTALL to hard drive using Refracta Installer in VirtualBox/VMware
1. Start Refracta Installer from the menu and follow the program instructions. Watch this screenshot.
2. When asked to chroot and install Grub – screenshot (in VirtualBox).
3. Keep current user (exton) and root passwords – you can always change passwords later.
4. You can also chroot and install Grub from Refracta Installer. If you do that you shall only run two commands:
grub-install /dev/sda
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
5. In the end of the installation process you will get an error message. Just ignore it and go on. Everything is alright.
NOTE1: You’ll find chroot-update-grub-lfs-exton-vbox.txt in /root. Just copy and paste the commands from there.

NOTE2: You can install LFS EXTON on any normal computer. If you want to do that you should first read my instruction How To dual boot, triple boot or multi boot Linux with Windows in a simple way and be happy. If you already have one or more Linux systems installed on your computer and use Grub as boot loader you shall (of course) refrain from installing Grub again. Just add boot lines for LFS EXTON in /boot/grub/grub.cfg or /etc/grub.d/40_custom so it looks like this:
#################################################
menuentry ‘LFS Exton 260925 (sda9-Samsung_T7)’ –class lfs –class gnu-linux –class gnu –class os $menuentry_id_option ‘gnulinux-simple-aa0e09e8-5e16-4991-9384-a15045ba3b3e’ {

if [ x$grub_platform = xxen ]; then insmod xzio; insmod lzopio; fi
insmod part_gpt
insmod ext2
if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
search –no-floppy –fs-uuid –set=root aa0e09e8-5e16-4991-9384-a15045ba3b3e
else
search –no-floppy –fs-uuid –set=root aa0e09e8-5e16-4991-9384-a15045ba3b3e

linux /boot/vmlinuz-7.2.5-amd64-exton root=UUID=aa0e09e8-5e16-4991-9384-a15045ba3b3e ro noresume
initrd /boot/initrd.img-7.2.5-amd64-exton
}
 #################################################
NOTE3: noresume shall be added to the boot line only if you lack a special SWAP partition. Without noresume the boot process will be about 20 seconds longer.
NOTE4: On some laptops you may have to add:
acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_rev_override=1 to the kernel boot line.
Do that if your screen is too dark.

KERNEL

LFS EXTON uses my “special” kernel 7.2.5-amd64-exton. You can of course compile you own LFS kernel if you want. If you want to use Refracta Snapshot you’ll have to keep “my” kernel though. Also the links (/vmlinuz and /initrd.img) to said kernel.

“NORMAL” use of the system
You can also use LFS EXTON as any other “normal” Linux system.

SOUND in LFS EXTON
You will have sound when logged in to LXQt as root. Use Pavucontrol (PulseAudio Volume Control) to change volume etc..

Using WiFi
It is very simple. Just click on the Network (Network Manager-nm-applet) icon in the menu to the right. Give your password and connect!

Using Samba
You can use PCManFM-qt to connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network. Watch this screenshot. You’ll find the correct IP-number by running the command ipconfig on your Windows computer.

Run it fast!
The system is really fast and responsive. You can run also LFS EXTON live super fast from RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick – screenshot. Use Boot alternative 2 or Advanced options… >> load to RAM. Watch the live boot screen below.)

SCREENSHOTS
1. Refracta Snapshot has successfully created a new ISO file
2. Showing a Samba connection
3. Running YouTube with good video and sound quality
4. Installing Grub in VirtualBox
5. Installing Grub (chroot) from within Refracta Installer
