CruxEX 3.7 live system (based on CRUX 3.7, released 220926) with LXDE and kernel 6.0.6-aufs-exton :: Build 221031

CruxEX 2022 64 bit Linux Live USB is based on CRUX 3.7 (latest version, released 220926), which is all Linux enthusiasts/nerds favorite OS. (CRUX is a lightweight Linux distribution for the x86_64 architecture targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is keep it simple, which is reflected in a straightforward tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style initscripts, and a relatively small collection of trimmed packages. The secondary focus is utilization of new Linux features and recent tools and libraries. CRUX also has a ports system which makes it easy to install and upgrade applications). CruxEX 3.7 2022 uses the LXDE Desktop environment. I have replaced the original CRUX kernel 5.15 with “my” special kernel 6.0.6-aufs-exton, with support for “extra everything”.

Unique
CruxEX 3.7 2022 build 221031 is – as my previous CRUX-remasters – unique in the world. I.e. there is no other CRUX Live CD/USB (as far as I know). In any case, not for downloading. The good thing with CruxEX is that it is a live system (which CRUX original isn’t) and that you can run CruxEX super fast from RAM. Also that you can install CruxEX to hard drive in about 5 minutes and then have a ready-to-go CRUX desktop system. You can after that install any (extra) desktop environment you like. NOTE: You can (of course) install new Desktops environments and other stuff also when running CruxEX from a USB stick – PERSISTENCE! Note also: To make CRUX original ready for everyday use will normally take 2 – 3 days!

LATEST NEWS ABOUT CruxEX 220104
I have released a new version of CruxEX today. This version has VirtualBox Guest Additions pre-installed, which means (among other things) that you can run CruxEX in VirtualBox in full screen. Read about how to install and run CruxEX from a USB stick in VirtualBox. Watch a screenshot when CruxEX is running i VirtualBox in full screen. (Using VirtualBox Guest Additions).

Replacement
My first remaster of CRUX 3.6.1 is from 201223. Now (220104) I have upgraded all included packages and replaced kernel 5.9.15-exton with kernel 5.15.12-exton-amd64. Study the most important upgraded packages.

Kernel and installed packages
Kernel 5.15.12 is the latest available stable kernel as of 220104. Among all installed and updated applications are Firefox, Google Chrome (for Netflix), GParted, PCManFM, Pulseaudio, Slim Login Manager, Gimp and NetworkManager. Furthermore compilation tools so that you can install programs from source. Note: Google Chrome is not in CRUX repositories. Nvidia Graphics Driver 470.94 is pre-installed. It will be automatically used if your computer has support for it. Furthermore I’ve installed VirtualBox Guest Additions so that you can run CruxEX in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot.

Exton|Defender SRS, 64 bit – a live “Spin” of Fedora “Rawhide” (upcoming Fedora 35) with Cinnamon 4.8.6 and kernel 5.13.0-rc-fedora35 – Build 210504

Exton|Defender SRS is a Linux system available as a Live DVD based on Fedora Rawhide, 64bit. (Rawhide is the development version of Fedora). Exton|Defender is for administrating or repairing your system and data after a crash. Exton|Defender aims to provide an easy way to carry out admin tasks on your computer, such as creating and editing the hard disk partitions. It comes with a lot of Linux software such as system tools and basic tools (editors, Midnight Commander, network tools). Exton|Defender can, however, also be used as a normal Linux Desktop System. It requires no hard drive installation, but can easily be installed to hard drive if you want. Desktop environment: Cinnamon 4.8.6. Since Fedora 34 was released 210427 this version of Exton|Defender can be seen as a “test” release. At first I was thinking of making a remaster of Fedora 34 with Cinnamon. Then I discovered that you can download an “official” Fedora 34 ISO with Cinnamon. You can also download some Rawhide “spins”. No one with the Cinnamon Desktop Environment though (as far as I know).

System Tools included
NTFS-3g, GParted, PartImage, Shred, Sfdisk (util-linux-ng), Rsync, Ddrescue, FSArchiver, TestDisk and Midnight Commander. Other programs (among many others): NetworkManager, Firefox, Parole Media Player, Samba, Java and Java Runtime Environment (JRE), Emacs, Safecopy, kernel headers and many compilation tools. See a complete LIST of all installed packages – Version 210504 (Fedora 35).

Installation to a USB stick in Fedora or Ubuntu – with persistence!
Read about how to perform such an installation on the INFO site. IMPORTANT NOTE: Since this Defender Build is based on an unstable version of Fedora I must strongly discourage you from installing Exton|Defender on a computer where you already have other Linux systems (and perhaps Windows installed). You may mess up your current (working) boot loader. So if you want persistence install Exton|Defender to a USB stick the way I describe on the INFO site. It is a much safer alternative!

THE IMPORTANCE OF Exton|Defender being based on upcoming Fedora 35
Programs won’t “crash” or anything like that. And I haven’t noticed any “bugs”. That said you should of course be a bit careful. This version of Exton|Defender is for people who like to use “cutting-edge” software and the latest kernels etc. You will always have the latest Linux/Fedora software installed if you regularly run the command sudo dnf upgrade –refresh.

About Exton|Defender SRS (Super Rescue System) Build 200623

It requires no hard drive installation, but can be installed to hard drive if you want. Desktop environment: Cinnamon 4.6.4. Kernel: 5.8-rc1.

What’s new in kernel 5.8?

Installation to a USB stick in Fedora or Ubuntu – with persistence!
Use the following command as root in Fedora:

time livecd-iso-to-disk –overlay-size-mb 2048 $EFI –format –reset-mbr exton-defender-fc33-64bit-cinnamon-2260mb-200623.iso /dev/sdX – screenshot when the command is running.
NOTE 1: Change X to b, d, e or… Check it carefully to avoid data losses. You must use the whole stick (for example /dev/sdb) not a partition (for example /dev/sdb1).

NOTE 2: After a few changes you can also use the above command also in Ubuntu. Read more about it…
NOTE 3: The above command is the only one that actually works. And you can’t use Fedora Media Writer (or any other program with a GUI (if you want persistence).
NOTE 4: If you don’t have an installed Fedora system on your computer you can run Exton|Defender from a DVD and install to a USB stick using the command above. Or run Exton|Defender from one USB stick and install on another USB stick.
