MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 42.5) and Kodi 20.2 Nexus :: Build 230704

NEWS/CHANGES 230704
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Nexus 20.2 – latest version, released 230702. Kodi is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. It is designed around a “10-foot user interface” for use with televisions and remote controls. Kodi runs very well in MeX. On a web site called FireStickTricks you can find instructions how to install 23 (?!) extra Kodi Builds with their own repositories and skins. The article is called Best Kodi Builds July 2023. I’ve tried Doomzday today. Works very well. Otherwise MeX version 230704 works in the same way as previous versions.

NEWS/CHANGES 230704
Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX Build 230704 is based only on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. I have replaced the original kernel (5.15) with “my” special kernel 6.4.0-amd64-exton. All installed packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 230704. This version of MeX uses the Ubuntu Desktop Minimal. I.e. Gnome 42.5 and Kodi 20.2. You can run Kodi “windowed” while logged in to Gnome. Alternatively you can start Kodi directly from the GDM3 login screen. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.

DebEX LXQt Bookworm (Debian 12) – 32 bit – for older computers with LXQt Desktop 1.2, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 6.3.0-rc6-exton ::: Build 230418

About all DebEX systems
All four systems/distributions are based on Debian Sid (unstable). Gnome 43.4 and Enlightenment 0.25.4 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Gnome/Enlightenment. Gnome 41 is used in DebEX GnomeKDE Plasma Desktop 5.27.2 is used in DebEX KDE. LXQt 1.2  is used in DebEX Build 230418 – 32 bit. The system language is English (in all four versions of DebEX).

Debian 12 (Sid/upcoming Bookworm) is still supposed to be unstable, but the “full hard freeze” took place already 230312.

What is DebEX Linux? Study this ANSWER generated by ChatGPT-4 AI.

NEWS 230418 about DebEX LXQt 32 bit Build 230418
I’ve made a new DebEX system for older computers. It uses LXQt 1.2 as Desktop environment. LXQt is a lightweight Qt desktop environment. It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. It is focused on being a classic desktop with a modern look and feel. Only a minimum of packages are installed. The ISO file is of only 1340 MB! Refracta Snapshot is pre-installed also in this version of DebEX, which means that you can make your own Debian 32 bit (Intel x86 32-bit architecture) live installable system in a very simple way. I mean change everything to your liking and then create a new ISO. I could run and install DebEX LXQt without problems on my oldest computer. An Acer Aspire 5102WLMi from the year 2006. So now you too can bring back life to your (very) old computer!
NOTE1: VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed, which means that you can run DebEX LXQt in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot…
NOTE2: You can’t watch Netflix in this version of DebEX: That’s because Google no longer support Widevine on 32 bit systems.

DebEX Gnome/Enlightenment – Build 230411 – with Gnome 43.4, Enlightenment 0.25.4, penguins-eggs (a remaster tool), Refracta Snapshot and kernel 6.3.0-rc4-amd64-exton

NEWS 230411 ABOUT DebEX Gnome/Enlightenment
This DebEX version replaces version 211215, which also had the Budgie Desktop as DE. However Budgie seems incompatible with Debian 12 (Sid) right now, so I had to remove it.

Debian 12 (Sid/upcoming Bookworm) is still supposed to be unstable, but the “full hard freeze” took place already 230312.

So this new version of DebEX is based on Debian Sid (unstable) with Gnome 43.4, Enlightenment 0.25.4 and kernel 6.3.0-rc4-amd64-exton. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of April 11, 2023.

ABOUT penguins-eggs
My other DebEX builds are created with Refracta Snapshot. So is the new DebEX version of 230411. But it is also possible to create a new DebEX (Debian 12) system with a remaster tool called penguins-eggs, which is pre-installed in version 230411. Very easy to handle. Penguins-eggs is a console utility, in active development, who let you to remaster your system and redistribute it as iso images or from the lan via PXE remote boot. Penguins-eggs is developed by Piero Proietti. It is based on Remastersys, Refracta, Systemback and father Knoppix.

How-to use penguins-eggs
1. Install DebEX (or any other Debian/Ubuntu based system) to hard drive
2. Change everything to your liking
3. Open up a terminal and run the command sudo eggs dad -c
Screenshot 1NOTE: If you choose fast your new ISO will be ready in about five minutes (even in VirtualBox). If you choose max it will take about two hours (in VirtualBox), but the ISO will be about 500 MB smaller.. A smaller ISO has one disadvantage. It doesn’t boot as fast as the one built using the option fast.
4. Go on choosing Yes

DebEX Gnome – 64 bit – for UEFI computers with Gnome Desktop 3.38 (latest), Calamares Installer, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 5.9.1-exton (latest) – Build 201018

NEWS 201018 about DebEX Gnome – a Refracta UEFI Build
I have made a new extra version of DebEX, which I call DebEX Gnome Live DVD. It’s a pure Debian system using the testing (bullseye) and unstable (sid) repositories. Gnome 3.38 (latest) is used as Desktop environment. I have removed the Mate Desktop, since Gnome now can be used on all kind of computers. Also when running DebEX in VirtualBox and VMware. No need for Nvidia’s proprietary graphics drivers when running this new version of DebEX. You can of course install such drivers if you want to.Furthermore I have replaced Google Chrome with Firefox ESR. It is now possible to watch Netflix movies using Firefox ESR in Linux. I have also replaced Refracta Installer with Calamares Installer, which makes it possible to install DebEX Gnome in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. All installed packages have been updated to the latest version as of 201018. DebEX Gnome uses kernel 5.9.1-exton corresponding Kernel.org’s latest kernel 5.91 released yesterday (201017).

About all DebEX systems

All four DebEX systems/distributions are a based on Debian Buster (10) and
Debian Bullseye/Sid (upcoming Debian 11). Budgie Desktop 10.5 and Enlightenment 0.23.1 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Barebone/Budgie/Enlightenment. Gnome 3.38 is used in DebEX Gnome. KDE Plasma Desktop 5:14 is used in DebEX KDE. LXQt is used in DebEX Build 19120932 bit. The system language is English (in all four versions of DebEX).

Running DebEX Gnome in VirtualBox
VirtualBox Guest Utils can be installed without problems – screenshot. Which means that you can run DebEX in VirtualBox using the whole screen – screenshot. Another good thing with version 201018 of DebEX Gnome is that it can be installed without problems in VirtualBox. I.e. you don’t have to chroot into the install partition and install Grub – screenshot.

Software management
DebEX (all three versions) uses Apt (apt-get) and Synaptic. I have also installed Pacapt (an Arch’s pacman-like package manager) in DebEX Gnome. It works extremely well. Available commands: pacapt -h. For example: pacapt -S libreoffice installs LibreOffice. In DebEX Gnome you can also use the Cactus Package Manager. Example commands: cpm i mousepad and cpm s gimp. (Install Mousepad and search for Gimp). CPM works very well.

THE REAL McCoy
DebEX is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian. So is DebEX.

SCREENSHOTS

DebEX Barebone Build 181001 – a non-efi version with Budgie Desktop, Calamares Installer, Refracta Tools and kernel 4.18.11-exton

NEWS 181001 about DebEX Budgie – a Refracta Build
A new version of DebEX Barebone with Budgie Desktop 10.4 and kernel 4.18.11-exton (equivalent to Kernel.org’s latest stable kernel 4.18.11) is ready. You can download “my” kernel and use it in another Debian (or Ubuntu) system if you want. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of October 1, 2018. DebEX Barebone is now based on Debian Buster/Sid (upcoming Debian 10). Most important: The ISO has decreased from 1330 MB to 929 MB, which makes it easier to run the system live from RAM. That ability allows DebEX Budgie to be very fast, since reading and writing data from/to RAM is much faster than on a hard disk drive. This version of DebEX is a non-efi build for older computers. You can use the Calamares 3.2.2-1 Installer Framework to install DebEX Budgie to your computer in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers.

MOVIE about Calamares Installer
Watch a movie
about the Calamares installation process in VirtualBox. Log in to Budgie as user with password live or as root with password root (when running DebEX live).

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta tools (pre-installed in all three versions of DebEX) to create your own installable Debian Live DVD once you have installed DebEX to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Debian live system. When you start Refracta it will look like this. You don’t even have to install DebEX to hard drive before you can use the Refracta tools. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Debian system while running DebEX from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO) will only take 10 – 50 min! You’ll find the ISO in /home/snapshot.

ExLight 64bit, Build 180217, based on Debian Unstable/Experimental with Enlightenment 0.22.1, Budgie 10.4 and Refracta tools

NEWS 180217 ABOUT ExLight
I’ve made a new version of ExLight, which also have the Budgie Desktop 10.4 pre-installed. You can now log in to Enlightenment 0.22.1 on all kind of computers, (which you couldn’t before). Budgie is focused on simplicity and elegance. Designed with the modern user in mind. See a screenshot of ExLight running the Budgie Desktop.

New sources for ExLight Build 180217

This new version of ExLight is based on Debian unstable/experimental. I.e. cutting edge software is used. Build 180217 is a total rebuild of ExLight. The ISO file size has decreased from 1560 MB to 986 MB, which means that ExLight now can run even faster from RAM.

NEWS 180217 ABOUT ExLight
I’ve made a new extra version of ExLight today based on Debian unstable/experimental. The “old” version from 171112 is based on Ubuntu 17.10 (alias Artful Aardvark) and Debian Buster/Stretch. Furthermore version 171112 uses Enlightenment 0.20 installed from Ubuntu’s repositories. Build 180217 of ExLight uses Enlightenment 0.22.1 (latest). Enlightenment 0.22.1 was released 171122. This version of ExLight (180217) has a much nicer look since I’ve installed the R-NightBling-II_E22 theme.

I have kept the old version (from 171112) of ExLight on SourceForge.net server since that version of ExLight can be considered more stable being based (mostly) on Ubuntu 17.10.

KERNEL
ExLight Build 180217 uses kernel 4.15.2-exlight, corresponding Kernel.org‘s kernel 4.15.2.

What’s new in Linux kernel 4.15?

Installed packages
Study all installed packages in ExLight Build 180217.

VirtualBox and VMware
ExLight Build 180217 runs very well in VirtualBox and VMware. Maybe you’ll have to use boot alternative 4 (failsafe).

DebEX LXQt (Debian Stretch) with LXQt 0.11, Refracta tools and kernel 4.9.0-9-exton (4.9.0-rc8)

debex-lxqt-live-desktop-smallNEWS 161209 about DebEX LXQt – a Refracta Build
A new version of DebEX Barebone with LXQt 0.11 (released 160924) and kernel 4.9.0-9-exton (equivalent to Kernel.org’s latest kernel 4.9-rc8) is ready. You can download “my” new kernel if you want to use it in another Debian/Ubuntu system. I have also installed Nvidia’s proprietary graphics driver 375.20 in this new version of DebEX Barebone. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of December 9, 2016. DebEX Barebone is now based on Debian testing – Stretch (upcoming Debian 9) and Debian unstable – Sid. What’s new in kernel 4.9?

Replacement
This version of DebEX with LXQt replaces version 161025, which used Xfce 4.12.1 as Desktop environment. Note: LXQt version 0.11 can’t be installed in Ubuntu 16.10 just yet.

About LXQt
Historically, LXQt is the product of the merge between LXDE-Qt, an initial Qt flavour of LXDE, and Razor-qt, a project aiming to develop a Qt based desktop environment with similar objectives as the current LXQt. The Razor project has merged with LXDE and is now LXQt.

Important about Refracta

This long period can only be explained by how awesome Xfce 4.10 was. But as all things, it needed some refreshing – and for that we saw lots of new contributors providing valuable feedback, features and bugfixes. Exton|OS Light Build 160728 :: Based on Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS with kernel 4.6.0-9-exton (4.6.4)

exton-os-logo-worldNEWS 160728 about Exton|OS Light Live DVD – ISO file of 885 MB
I’ve made a new extra version of Exton|OS based on Ubuntu 16.04.1 (alias Xenial Xerus) 64 bit with only a minimum of packages pre-installed. Among them a terminal emulator (LXTerminal), a Web Browser (Google Chrome – so you can run Netflix), PCManFM (file manager), NetworkManager, GParted (Partition Editor), Samba (so you can reach your Windows computers) and Synaptic (Package Manager). I give you the pleasure of installing all extra packages you need after a hard disk installation of Exton|OS Light. Use Synaptic for that. You can of course also install new packages while running the system live (from DVD/USB stick), but nothing will be saved after a reboot. Unless you have followed my USB Install Instruction (under B) or used UNetbootin) and used Boot alternative 2 – Persistent when you have used UNetbootin. If you have plenty of RAM you can even install big programs (such as LibreOffice) while running the system live even from DVD. Exton|OS Light’s Window manager Openbox guarantees lightness and elegance.

Replacement
This version of Exton|OS Light from 160728 replaces version 160207 of Exton|OS Light. Exton|OS Light is now based on Debian Stretch/Sid and Ubuntu 16.04.1 (released 160721).

About
Exton|OS Light Live CD is based on Ubuntu 16.04.1 Xenial Xerus 64 bit and Debian Stretch/Sid. Exton|OS Light’s ISO file (of 885 MB!) is a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to an USB pen drive. You can then even run Exton|OS from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence! Read my USB INSTRUCTION under B).

Packages
All installed packages in Exton|OS Light have been updated to the latest available version as at July 28, 2016. Study the full package list.

Used KERNEL
My special kernel 4.6.0-9-exton, equivalent to Kernel.org’s kernel 4.6.4. You can download “my” kernel if you want to use it in another Ubuntu/Debian system.
