RaspEX Rpi4 based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS “Jammy Jellyfish” with LXDE, kernel 5.15.24-exton-v7l+, Raspotify, RealVNC, PuTTy, Samba and Bluetooth :: Build 220228

NEWS 220228 about RaspEX with LXDE based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish.
I have upgraded the whole system and replaced the old kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+ with kernel 5.15.24-exton-v7l+. RaspEX Build 220228 is a Linux ARM (32bit) system for Raspberry Pi 4 with 2GB/4GB/8GB RAM and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. It is based on Debian, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Linaro (Open Source software for ARM SoCs). Both Firefox and Chromium Browser are pre-installed. I have also installed Samba and RealVNC so you can connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network and/or control RaspEX on your Raspberry Pi 4 from your Windows computers with VNC Viewer and/or PuTTY (Telnet and SSH client). Furthermore some extra Network Tools, SMTube (YouTube browser which allows to browse, search and play YouTube videos), PulseAudio for better sound in YouTube and RaspotifyRaspotify is a Spotify Connect client for Raspbian on the Raspberry Pi that just works. Study all installed packages in RaspEX Build 220228.

Most IMPORTANT News/Changes in Build 220228
1. I have installed an old version of Chromium with DRM/Widevine support, which means that you can watch Netflix (and possibly also HBO, YouTube TV, Amazon Prime Video, etc.) using the Chromium Browser. I did that following the instructions here.
2. In this build of RaspEX you can also run Chromium/Firefox logged in as root. You will have sound, which you normally won’t have as root on Debian/Ubuntu systems.

SlackEX (Slackware) 15.0 RC2 with LXQt, Refracta Installer and Refracta Snapshot (so you can create your own Slackware 15.0 system) ::: Build 220110

NEWS ABOUT SlackEX 15.0 RC2 with LXQT
Because I like Slackware so much I’ve made a new extra version of SlackEX 15.0 RC2. This time with LXQt as Desktop environment. LXQt is a lightweight Qt desktop environment. It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. It is focused on being a classic desktop with a modern look and feel. LXQt is not included in Slackware’s repositories. I’ve built the LXQt packages following the instructions at Gitlab.com. If you already have Slackware/SlackEX installed to hard drive you can do the same. (If you want LXQt). It’s very easy if you have KDE installed. Otherwise you’ll have to install some KDE/LXQt dependencies. Not that difficult though. So SlackEX Build 220110 is a live remaster of Slackware 15.0 RC2. It was released 211118. You can install SlackEX to hard drive and also use Refracta Snapshot for creating your very own live installable Slackware 15.0 system. Kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21 is used. You can (of course) install Slackware’s latest kernel 5.15.13 if you want. But to be able to create your own Slackware 15.0 system you will have to use (boot up with) kernel 5-15-5-exton-amd64-rt21. Study all pre-installed packages in Build 220110…

Slackware is the first widely-used Linux system, which is still developing. Slackware has existed since 1993. In comparison with for example Ubuntu and Linux Mint, many people believe that Slackware is “difficult”. Any novice can quickly learn to use Ubuntu they say. My remasters of Slackware Current (15.0/14.2), which I call SlackEX 15.0/14.2/Current 64 bit Linux Live DVD, is however just as easy to use as Ubuntu and/or Linux Mint. Some tend to complain that the Program Management in Slackware is awkward. That was perhaps earlier the case, but not anymore.

NEW features in version 220110 of SlackEX
Kernel 5.15-5-exton-amd64-rt21 is used so that Refracta Snapshot can be used. Using Refracta Snapshot you can change everything and create your very own Slackware 15.0 system. Read more about Refracta Snapshot. LXQt is used as Desktop environment. Furthermore I have installed Grub2, which can be used as boot loader (if you want) after a hard drive install using Refracta Installer. A lot of other Slackware packages are pre-installed. Study the full package LIST. Log in to LXQt as the ordinary user user with password live or as root with password root. While running SlackEX LXQt in VirtualBox you can do so in full screen since VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot. Also showing a Samba connection in VirtualBox.

Why Slackware?
Slackware is grossly underestimated (in my opinion). This article give you ten (10) reasons to choose Slackware. And this article explains how Slackware works in 2021/2022.

RaspEX Rpi4 based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS “Jammy Jellyfish” with LXDE, kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+, Raspotify, RealVNC, PuTTy, Samba and Bluetooth :: Build 211221

NEWS 211221 about RaspEX with LXDE based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish.
I have upgraded the whole system and replaced the old kernel 5.4.83-exton-v7l+ with kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+. RaspEX Build 211221 is a Linux ARM system for Raspberry Pi 4 with 2GB/4GB/8GB RAM and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. It is based on Debian, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Linaro (Open Source software for ARM SoCs). Both Firefox and Midori Private Browser are pre-installed. Study all installed packages in RaspEX Build 211221.

More about RaspEX

RaspEX is a full Linux Desktop system with LXDE (an extremely fast-performing and energy-saving desktop environment) with many other useful programs pre-installed. Firefox is used as Web Browser and Synaptic as Package Manager. You can use Samba and RealVNC to connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network and/or control RaspEX on your Raspberry Pi 4 from your Windows computers with VNC Viewer and/or PuTTY (Telnet and SSH client). You can use Synaptic to install any extra packages you may need. For example LibreOffice. RaspEX uses Ubuntu’s software repositories so you can install thousands of extra packages if you want.

Kernels
Kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+ (for Rpi 4) and 5.10.87-exton-v7+ (for Rpi 3/2) are used in Build 211221.

Why shall I use RaspEX?
Eight Operating Systems are recommended by Raspberrypi.org. Among them Noobs, Raspbian (Debian Bullseye) and Snappy Ubuntu Core. RaspEX is faster (“fast as lightning”), more useful and more fun to use. (In my opinion). One member at this site thought that running RaspEX (for Raspberry Pi 2 Model B) was like running Raspberry Pi on “steroids“. If you use the new Raspberry Pi 4 RaspEX will run even faster!

ExTiX Deepin 21.1 Live based on Deepin 20.1 (latest) with Skype, Spotify, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 5.10.4-exton :: Build 210103

NEWS 210106 ABOUT ExTiX Deepin 21.1
I’ve uploaded a new extra version of ExTiX Deepin, which has VirtualBox Guest Additions pre-installed. With those installed you can run ExTiX in full screen in VirtualBox. The additions couldn’t be installed while using kernel 5.10.4-exton. I had to install Deepin’s original kernel 5.4.50-amd64-desktop. In version 210106 I’ve also included Refracta Installer. Use it in VirtualBox if you want an exact copy of ExTiX Deepin installed. Before starting Refracta Installer you should run the commands sudo apt update followed by sudo apt install grub-pc. When asked install Grub in MBR. Watch a screenshot showing when the installation is ready.

NEWS 210103 ABOUT ExTiX Deepin
I’ve released a new version of ExTiX Deepin today (210103). This ExTiX Build is based on Deepin 20.1 released by Deepin Technology 201230.

NEW FUNCTIONS etc

1. You can run ExTiX from RAM. Use boot alternative 2 (load to RAM) or Advanced. A wonderful way to run Linux if you have enough RAM. Everything will be super fast. When ExTiX has booted up you can remove the DVD or USB stick.
2. You will have the opportunity to choose language before you enter the Deepin 20.1 Desktop. All main languages are supported.
3. I have replaced Deepin Installer with the Reborn version of Deepin Installer. Works better in every way.
4. I have replaced kernel 5.9.1-exton with kernel 5.10.4-exton. Corresponding the latest available stable kernel 5.10.4 from Kernel.org.
5. Spotify and Skype are pre-installed.
6. You can watch Netflix while running Firefox.
7. You can install ExTiX Deepin also in VirtualBox/VMware using Deepin Installer. (In previous versions you had to “chroot” into the install partition and install Grub).
8. As an alternative to Apt you can use the Cactus Package Manager. Example commands: cpm i mousepad and cpm s gimp. (Install Mousepad and search for Gimp). CPM works very well.
9. Install ExTiX to a USB stick preferably with Rufus 3.13 in Windows.

UNIQUE
I may add that there is no other live version of Deepin 20.1.

SCREENSHOTS

2. Spotify is running
3. YouTube is running
4. ExTiX showing a Samba connection to a Windows computer
5. ExTiX Build 210106 running in full screen in VirtualBox (after VirtualBox Guest Additions have been installed)

NEWS 200324 ABOUT RaspEX
In RaspEX Build 200321 Bluetooth can’t be used without a Bluetooth dongle. Now I’ve added a script, which load the Bluetooth daemon at boot. I therefore had to upload a new version of RaspEX today. Bluetooth works very well in today’s version. Watch this screenshot.

NEWS 200321 about RaspEX with LXDE based on (upcoming) Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa. Works on the new Raspberry Pi 4
I have upgraded the whole system and replaced the old kernel 4.19.63-exton-v7l+ with kernel 4.19.108-exton-v7l+. RaspEX Build 200321 is a Linux ARM system for Raspberry Pi 4, 3 Model B, 3 Model B+ and Raspberry Pi 2. It is based on Debian, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Linaro (Open Source software for ARM SoCs). Raspberry Pi 4: How much better is it than the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+?

Compatibility :: March 2020
Unfortunately not all systems made for Raspberry Pi 3 and 2 will run on the new Raspberry Pi 4 computer. They need to be upgraded with a new kernel. I therefore have to upgrade the systems I distribute. I.e. RaspEX, RaspEX with OpenCPN, RaspEX Kodi, RaspAnd Marshmallow, RaspAnd Nougat 7.1.2, RaspAnd Oreo 8.1, RaspAnd Pie, EXTON OpSuS Rpi, FedEX Rpi3 and RaspArch. I have until now (200321) only upgraded RaspEX, RaspEX Kodi, RaspArch and RaspEX with OpenCPN. Read about the new Raspberry Pi 4.

THE IMPORTANCE of RaspEX LXDE now being based on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa (UNSTABLE/DEVELOPMENT)

I don’t think it is too important since RaspEX doesn’t use complicated Desktop Environments like KDE, Gnome or Unity. Programs won’t crash or anything like that. And I haven’t discovered any bugs to report. Just upgrade your RaspEX installation regularly and you won’t have any problems. I think.

Why shall I use RaspEX?

Run Raspberry Pi’s PIXEL Desktop on a PC or Mac – an Exton modified Build 191102 with Refracta Snapshot (so you can create your own Raspberrypi Debian 10 Pixel system)

NEWS 191102 about Raspberry Pi Debian 10 Pixel – 32bit – an Exton Build
My previous Debian Pixel Build from is from 190705 . Study all included packages in Build 191102- latest by 191102. I’ve added NetworkManager and also Wicd, which makes it easier to configure wireless connections. Choose the one which works for you.

Reason for a new Raspberry Pi Debian 10 Pixel build right now
Yesterday (191101) two members on this site wrote to me saying that Refracta Installer didn’t work for them. I checked it and they were right. The Refracta Installer had to be upgraded from version 9.3.3 to version 9.5.3. While I was at it I also upgraded Refracta Snapshot to the latest version – 10.2.9.

Most important changes in Build 191102
This build replaces version 161223 , 170425, 180316, 180928 and 190705 . I’ve upgraded Raspbian/Debian from Stretch to Buster – Debian 10 stable. I’ve also upgraded the kernel from 4.19.0-5-686-pae to 4.19.0-6-686-pae. I’ve also included kernel 4.19.0-6-686, which shall be used on older computers. PAE (Physical Address Extension) increases the physical memory addressable by the system from 4 GB to 64 GB. Firefox have been installed so you’ll have a browser when logged in as root. You can’t run Chromium as root. Another good thing about Firefox is that you can use it to watch Netflix movies.

raspex-16.04-opencpn-4.4.0-touchscreen-20160702-smallRaspEX – Build 181120 based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS – with OpenCPN 4.8.8 (latest stable version released 181107) – especially made for the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, but it can of course also be used on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and Raspberry Pi 2 Model B.

OpenCPN is a free software (GPLv2) project to create a concise chart plotter and navigation software, for use underway or as a planning tool. OpenCPN is developed by a team of active sailors using real world conditions for program testing and refinement.

Replacement
This build (181120) replaces build 180331. Ubuntu has been upgraded to version 18.04 LTS and OpenCPN to version 4.8.8 – latest stable version released 181107. RaspEX Build 181120 is made especially for the new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, but can of course also be used on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and Raspberry Pi 2 Model B.

ABOUT RaspEX Build 181120
RaspEX is a Linux ARM system for Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, Model B+ and Pi 2 model B. It is based on Debian Stretch (Debian 9), Bionic Beaver (Ubuntu 18.04 LTS) and Linaro (Open Source software for ARM SoCs). In this new version (181120) I’ve installed OpenCPN 4.8.8 from source.

Kernel
Kernel 4.14.80-v7 is used.

About SSH, PuTTY, Samba, VNC4Server and VNC Viewer

SSH, Samba and VNC4Server are pre-installed in RaspEX Build 181120. You need to install PuTTy and and VNC Viewer in your Windows system if you want to connect to RaspEX/Raspberry Pi 3/2 from Windows. (Please read the developers information about how to configure PuTTy and VNC Viewer).

The 7″ Touchscreen Monitor for Raspberry Pi
To my great joy also this version of RaspEX work together with the 7″ Touchscreen Monitor for Raspberry Pi “out of the box”.

Why shall I use RaspEX?

Eight Operating Systems are recommended by Raspberrypi.org. Among them Noobs, Raspbian (Debian Stretch) and Snappy Ubuntu Core. RaspEX is faster (“fast as lightning”), more useful and more fun to use. (In my opinion). One member at this site thought that running RaspEX (for Raspberry Pi 2 Model B) was like running Raspberry Pi on “steroids“. RaspEX Build 181022, 181010 (with BunsenLabs Desktop) and 181120 (current with OpenCPN) are of course even faster, especially if you run the systems on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ computer.
