RLRH EXTON Linux Live System compatible with Rocky Linux 9.2 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux® :: Build 230922

ABOUT RLRH EXTON Build 230922
RLRH EXTON is a LIVE version of Rocky Linux 9.2 which is also compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux®. Rocky Linux is an open-source enterprise operating system designed to be 100% bug-for-bug compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux®. It is under intensive development by the community.

LIVE LINUX SYSTEM
You can run RLRH EXTON live (i.e. from a DVD or USB stick) on EFI and non-EFI computers. (Rocky Linux is not a LIVE system). From Wikipedia: A live CD or live DVD is a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk drive.

CREATE YOUR OWN Rocky Linux System
You can also create your own Rocky Linux system using Refracta Snapshot, which is pre-installed. I.e. change everything to your liking and then create a new ISO. That can be done after a hard drive installation. If you have plenty of RAM it is also possible to create a new ISO while running RLRH EXTON live.

MORE ABOUT RLRH EXTON
Gnome 40 is used as DE. Two kernels are installed – 6.5.3-1.el9.elrepo.x86_64 and 6.5.3-amd64-exton. Use the one you prefer (after a hard drive installation).

Study all installed packages in RLRH EXTON Build 230922.

UNIQUE

RLRH EXTON is unique. I.e. there is no other live version of Rocky Linux around (as far as I know).

SCREENSHOTS
1. The GDM login screen. If you want to log in as root to Gnome you shall choose “Other”.
2. Showing how to fix a wired Network connection (sometimes necessary).
3. Showing how to mount a NTFS partition. The package ntfs-3g has to be installed first. Do it with the command sudo dnf install ntfs-3g. (I forgot to do that).
4. RLRH EXTON is running in VMware.

RaspArch Rpi4 Build 230908 :: Run Arch Linux with Enlightenment DE on your new Raspberry Pi 4 computer :: Install using Rufus 4.2, Win32 Disk Imager or Etcher in Windows!

RaspArch Build 230908 especially for the “new” Raspberry Pi 4 released in May 2020
This version (230908) is especially made for the “new” Raspberry Pi 4, but it can of course also be used on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and Raspberry Pi 2 Model B.

RaspArch is a “remaster” of Arch Linux ARM. The original compressed system is of about 230 MB. When I added the Enlightenment 0.25.4 (latest version) Desktop Environment (DE), the LXDE DE, PulseAudio, Firefox, Yay, Gimp and NetworkManager the system size increased a lot. RaspArch is a “ready-to-go” ARM system. It must be installed on a Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or Raspberry Pi 2 Model B computer. RaspArch Build 230908 replaces RaspArch Build 221202. Build 221202 had only the LXDE DE installed. I.e. not Enlightenment.

NEWS in RaspArch Build 230908
A new kernel – 6.1.47-1-rpi-ARCH. All included packages have been updated to the latest version as of 230908. I’ve also replaced Yaourt with Yay – Yet Another Yogurt – An AUR Helper Written in Go. I came to know that Yaourt is dead. I.e. Yaourt is not being developed anymore. I have also installed PulseAudio. I’ve replaced the LightDM Display Manager with SLiM. Finally the sound works very well in RaspArch. Nice if you like YouTube. I’ve also replaced Wicd with NetworkManager. It works better. NOTE: To be able to install Yay I had to install a lot of development tools. When logged in as the normal user archpi you will enjoy the Enlightenment DE. When logged in as root you will enter the LXDE DE from SLiM. The password for archpi is raspberry. The password for root is root.

ExTiX Deepin 23.9 Live based on Deepin 23 BETA (latest) with Refracta Snapshot and kernel 6.5.0-extix-amd64-desktop-hwe :: Build 230903

NEWS 230903 ABOUT ExTiX with Deepin 23 BETA
I’ve released a new version of ExTiX Deepin today (230903). The previous ExTiX Deepin 23 version is from 230403. This ExTiX Build is based on Deepin 23 BETA (latest version) released by Deepin Technology in May 2023. Please read the Release Notes. As you can see the developers urge people to try Deepin BETA in a non-production environment! I must say, though, that I haven’t discovered any “bugs”. And the installed programs won’t “crash” or anything like that. On the contrary ExTiX Deepin 23.9 with the Deepin DE 23 works pretty well I would say. I have nevertheless kept ExTiX 22.12 with Deepin 20.8 on the server. Deepin 20.8/20.9 is the stable version released 221208. ExTiX 23.9 uses kernel 6.5.0-extix-amd64-desktop-hwe. ExTiX 23.9 works in the same way as all other ExTiX versions. I.e. you can install it to hard drive while running the system live. Use Refracta Installer for that. You can also create your own live installable Deepin 23 system with Refracta Snapshot. (Using ExTiX 23.9 as a “base system”). So easy that a ten year old child can do it!

Used KERNEL

My special kernel 6.5.0-extix-amd64-desktop-hwe corresponding Kernel.org’s kernel 6.5.

What’s new in Linux kernel 6.5

Upgrade Deepin 23 to BETA 2 or to the stable 23 version of Deepin
Future upgrades are very easy to perform. Just run the command sudo apt update followed by sudo apt upgrade. The BETA 2 version of Deepin will be released later in September 2023.

Please read (and watch) a full enthusiastic review of ExTiX 22.12 with Deepin 20.8…

SCREENSHOTS
1. ExTiX 23.9 running in full screen in VirtualBox (VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed)
2. ExTiX Deepin 23.9 Desktop
3. ExTiX 23.9 running Refracta Snapshot
4. ExTiX 23.9 LightDM Login Screen

ArchEX (Arch Linux) Live with Pantheon, Gnome 44.4, LXQt 1.3, kernel 6.4.12.arch1-1 and Calamares Installer 3.2.62 :: Build 230826

ABOUT ArchEX Build 230826
I’ve made a new extra version of ArchEX with Pantheon, Gnome 44.4 and LXQt 1.3 as Desktop Environments (DE). This ArchEX version uses kernel 6.4.12-arch1-1. Pantheon is the desktop environment of elementary OS. It is written in Vala, using GTK 3 and Granite. ArchEX Build 230826 has the same “bugs” as ArchEX Build 230812 – see below.

Known “bugs” or errors in this ArchEX Build
I’ve kept my “old” ArchEX version 220905 on the server since ArchEX Build 230826 (and Build 230812) have some “bugs” i.e.:
1) When installing ArchEX to hard drive using Calamares Installer you’ll have to format the install partition in another Linux system in advance. If you let Calamares format you will get filesystem errors and therefore ArchEX won’t boot. Watch this screenshot…
So using Calamares it shall look like this screenshot shows.
NOTE 1: When installing ArchEX in VirtualBox you don’t have to worry about filesystem errors (for some unknown reason).
2) It can be difficult to configure a WiFi connection. To be able to use a WiFi connection you may have to unload and load the correct kernel module.
For example athk10_pci, iwlwifi or wl. Example commands:
$ sudo modprobe -r ath10k_pci
$ sudo modprobe ath10k_pci
Check which kernel module to load with the command: lspci
Also watch this screenshot…
NOTE 2: The WiFi problem is gone after a hard drive installation. I.e. you will automatically be connected.
3) Not a bug, but to be able to run the file manager PCManFM-qt as root you’ll have to use this command: sudo dbus-launch pcmanfm-qt.
4) Also not really a bug, but to be able to paste highlighted text into a terminal with your mouse’s middle button (which can be very handy) you’ll have to use QTerminal or xterm. It is not possible using LXTerminal or Gnome Terminal. Watch this screenshot…
NOTE 3: The “middle button problem” occurs only when logged in to the Pantheon Desktop.

Aside from the above mentioned bugs ArchEX Build 230826 works very well both live and from hard drive.

Study all installed packages in ArchEX 2023 with Pantheon, Gnome 44.4 and LXQt 1.3.

ArchEX (Arch Linux) Live with Deepin 20.9, LXQt 1.3, kernel 6.4.9.arch1-1 and Calamares Installer 3.2.62 :: Build 230812

NEWS about ArchEX 230812
A new version of ArchEX (Arch Linux Live) is ready! In this new version, which I call ArchEX 2023, I have added the Deepin 20.9 (latest) Desktop Environment (DE). Deepin DE (made in China!) is devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users. I came to like Deepin DE very much when I installed it in ExTiX 23.4. So I thought why not install Deepin DE also in ArchEX? Furthermore I have added the  LXQt 1.3 (latest) Desktop Environment. You can choose the one you want at LightDM’s Login screen.

Known “bugs” or errors in this ArchEX Build
I’ve kept my “old” ArchEX version 220905 on the server since ArchEX Build 230812 have some “bugs” i.e.:
1) You can’t change wallpaper in Deepin. That is a known bug in Arch Linux and all distros based on Arch Linux.
2) When installing ArchEX to hard drive using Calamares Installer you’ll have to format the install partition in another Linux system in advance. If you let Calamares format you will get filesystem errors and therefore ArchEX won’t boot. Watch this screenshot…
So using Calamares it shall look like this screenshot shows.
NOTE: When installing ArchEX in VirtualBox you don’t have to worry about filesystem errors (for some unknown reason).
3) It can be difficult to configure a WiFi connection. To be able to use a WiFi connection you may have to unload and load the correct kernel module.
For example athk10_pci, iwlwifi or wl. Example commands:
$ sudo modprobe -r ath10k_pci
$ sudo modprobe ath10k_pci
Check which kernel module to load with the command: lspci
Also watch this screenshot…
Aside from the above mentioned bugs ArchEX Build 230812 works very well both live and from hard drive.

Study all installed packages in ArchEX 2023 with Deepin and LXQt.

WHO should run Arch Linux?

My answer: The system fits the “advanced” Linux user/enthusiast, who would be willing to run an occasional command from time to time.

BENEFITS of ArchEX/Arch Linux
“Cutting Edge”-software and speed. You will for example always run the latest kernel if you upgrade ArchEX/Arch (for example) every month.

ArchEX (Arch Linux) “Mini” with LXQt 1.3, all Arch Linux installation scripts, Calamares, Yay, VirtualBox Guest Additions and kernel 6.4.3 (latest) :: Build 230719

NEWS ABOUT ArchEX 230719
I’ve made a new extra “Mini” version of ArchEX. It has four advantages compared with ArchEX Build 220905.

A) This ArchEX build is smaller. The ISO file is “only” of 2330 MB compered with Build 220905 which is of 4010 MB. This is of importance since ArchEX can run very fast live from RAM. So your computer needs lesser RAM to run Build 230719. Should be enough with 2 GB. NOTE: I was hoping to make the ISO file even smaller, but that was impossible since the Calamares Installer and Yay has a lot of dependencies.

B) ArchEX Build 230719 has all Arch Linux original installation scripts, which means that you can use this build to install Arch Linux “the Arch way” following the Installation Guide. Or you can just follow my example here. You can have my instructions up in Firefox while installing as this screenshot shows. When installing from Arch Linux official live DVD you’ll have to do it in console mode. (Could be tricky).

C) If you install Arch Linux (or ArchEX using Calamares) in VirtualBox or Qemu you can do it in full screen. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed in ArchEX Build 230719 (and in Build 220905). Watch this screenshot. In Qemu you can just choose the screen resolution you want.

D) ArchEX Build 230719 uses kernel 6.4.3 (latest) and has support for more wireless cards. Kernel modules ath10k and wl are loaded also when running ArchEX live, which obviously means a lot.

Study all installed packages in Build 230719…

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 42.5) and Kodi 20.2 Nexus :: Build 230704

NEWS/CHANGES 230704
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Nexus 20.2 – latest version, released 230702. Kodi is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. It is designed around a “10-foot user interface” for use with televisions and remote controls. Kodi runs very well in MeX. On a web site called FireStickTricks you can find instructions how to install 23 (?!) extra Kodi Builds with their own repositories and skins. The article is called Best Kodi Builds July 2023. I’ve tried Doomzday today. Works very well. Otherwise MeX version 230704 works in the same way as previous versions.

NEWS/CHANGES 230704
Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX Build 230704 is based only on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. I have replaced the original kernel (5.15) with “my” special kernel 6.4.0-amd64-exton. All installed packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 230704. This version of MeX uses the Ubuntu Desktop Minimal. I.e. Gnome 42.5 and Kodi 20.2. You can run Kodi “windowed” while logged in to Gnome. Alternatively you can start Kodi directly from the GDM3 login screen. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.

MX Linux 23 BETA 2 Exton Remix 64bit with KDE and Android Studio :: Build 230620

ABOUT my MX Linux 23 BETA 2 Remix 230620
MX Linux (based on Debian) is by far the most popular Linux system in the world according to DistroWatch.com. I tested MX Linux a few years ago and noticed immediately that one can change the MX system and create a new ISO with MX Snapshot. My first MX Linux Remix is from 191018. And my second remix was ready 220524.

MX Linux 23 BETA 2
My first remix was based on MX Linux 18.3 (released in May 2019). MX Linux 23 BETA 2 Libretto was released on June 16, 2023. It is based on Debian 12 (Stable/Bookworm). MX uses Debian’s standard kernel 6.1. You won’t notice that MX 23 is a BETA version. Everything just works.

My changes of the original MX Linux 23 system
1. All packages have been upgraded to the latest version as of 230620. Study the full package LIST.
2. I have installed Android Studio Flamingo.  With it you can run a “variety of Android devices”. You can also create applications (apps) and test run them in Android Studio. NOTE: You can use Android Studio while running MX Linux live (i.e. from a USB stick or a DVD), but not in VirtualBox or VMware. In VirtualBox you will get an error message saying Your cpu does not support required features (vt-x or svm) screenshot. That’s because VirtualBox as of yet does NOT support nested virtualization.
3. Some cosmetic changes. I.e. nice wallpapers.

Installation to a USB stick
Please note that you can only use Rufus 4.1 in Windows for USB installations. If you use other software the stick won’t be made bootable. One exception: You can without problems use Ventoy (instead of Rufus).

Performance
Everything in my remix works very well. MX Linux works on new and old computers. I can mention that I could run (and install) my MX remix without problems on my 18 year old laptop Acer Aspire 5102WLMi. You can of course make your own MX Linux Remix with my remix as “groundwork”. The whole process will only take about 5 minutes! Also in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot showing how it looks when MX Snapshot has started.

Login to the KDE Desktop as user with password live.

Hard drive installations
Use MX Installer. It works very well. Watch a YouTube Video about it. And watch this screenshot…

Create your own MX Linux Remix
Use MX Snapshot. It is very easy to do. The whole process will only take about 5 minutes! Also in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot showing how it looks when MX Snapshot has started.

ABOUT RaspAnd 13 – Build 230616
RaspAnd 13 runs very well on a Raspberry Pi 4. I.e. the system is pretty responsive if you use a micro SD card of good quality. RaspAnd 13 has the following apps pre-installed: Aptoide App Store, F-Droid Store (Free and Open Source App Repository), Spotify, Firefox Browser (so you can watch YouTube), Termux (terminal emulator), Clash of Clans and Aida64.

ABOUT Android 13, which was released in August 2022…
Read also an article about The Evolution of Android  – List of Android Versions and Release Dates.

PLEASE NOTE that you must be aware of the fact that the Raspberry Pi 4 computer has its limitations and that Android 13 is a very advanced Linux system. Having said that I must also say that the apps I have included in this Build (see above) work very well.

LFA (Linux For All) 64bit Live System – Build 230608 – with Gnome 44 and kernel 6.4.0-rc4-amd64-exton :: Create you own LFA/Ubuntu installable 23.04 system!

Linux For All (LFA) Build 230608 with Gnome 44
is a simple remaster of Ubuntu 23.04, code-named Lunar Lobster. It’s a total rebuild. I.e. nothing is left of the old LFA system. NOTE: Ubuntu 23.04 will be supported (only) until January 2024. To be able to upgrade Gnome from version 42.4 to 44 I first had to upgrade Ubuntu from version 22.04 (supported until April 2027) to 23.04.

NEWS ABOUT LFA Build 230608

1. All packages the ordinary Linux user can wish for are pre-installed. Study the full packages list.
2. Kernel 6.4.0-rc4-amd64-exton is used. You can of course switch to Ubuntu’s original kernel if you prefer that.
3. The Desktop environment is Gnome 44. (Ubuntu’s original DE).
4. The main Web Browser is Firefox. So you can watch Netflix!
5. I have included Refracta tools (Refracta Snapshot) to make it possible for you to create your own installable Ubuntu 23.04 Live System once you have installed LFA to hard drive.
6. You can run LFA fast in RAM. Use boot alternative 2 Load to RAM – see below.
7. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed , which means (among other things) that you can run LFA in VirtualBox in full screen. Watch this screenshot.

What’s new in kernel 6.4?
