MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 42.5), Kodi 19.4 and kernel 6.2.3-amd64-exton :: Build 230314

NEWS/CHANGES 230314
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Matrix 19.4 – latest version. Kodi is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. It is designed around a “10-foot user interface” for use with televisions and remote controls. Kodi runs very well in MeX. On a web site called FireStickTricks you can find instructions how to install 27 (?!) extra Kodi Builds with their own repositories and skins. The article is called Best Kodi Builds March 2023. I’ve tried Grindhouse today. Works very well. Otherwise MeX version 230314 works in the same way as previous versions.

MORE MeX NEWS 230314
1. The MeX ISO is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive.
2. Another big improvement is that MeX now can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can eject the disc (DVD)/USB stick. You’ll need at least 4 GB RAM to run MeX that way. The ISO file is of only 2050 MB so MeX will run super fast from RAM!
3. I have replaced Google Chrome with Firefox. Google Chrome is no longer needed to be able to run Netflix in Linux.
4. The best thing with this new MeX build – Create your own installable Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Live DVD with Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed)! The whole “remaster process” is so simple that a 10 year old child can do it.
5. I have installed Calamares Installer as in many of my other Linux builds. Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. Very easy to use. You can use Calamares to install MeX on both UEFI computers and non UEFI computers (for example VirtualBox and VMware).
6. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed so you can run MeX in full screen in VirtualBox.

Used KERNEL
Kernel 6.2.3-amd64-exton

What’s new in kernel 6.2?

Who can benefit from MeX?
All who like Debian/Ubuntu and want a system that is easy to use and maintain. And of course those who want to create their own Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system in a very simple way with Refracta Snapshot. Regarding MeX also those who want to run a Linux system super fast from RAM and/or like to run Linux from a USB flash drive. And those who want a new kernel – 6.2.3.

PuppEX Jammy64 (Puppy Linux) compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS :: Build 220630

NEWS ABOUT PuppEX Jammy64 22.04 220630
This Puppy derivative is built from Puppy_Linux_vanillapup 22.04.39, which is build from Ubuntu packages and packages build from source. Puppy_Linux_vanillapup is the best Puppy Linux system I’ve ever tried so I decided to make it even better. My changes of the original system:
1. I’ve replaced kernel 5.15 with kernel 5.18.7-exton
2. Development tools (build-essential) are installed
3. Latest Firefox is installed
4. Added the ntfs-3g package (so NTFS partitions are writable)
5. Added GParted
6. Added video codecs (libavcodec58) so that YouTube videos and Netflix movies can run in Firefox.
The ISO size has therefore increased from 343 MB to 628 MB, but PuppEX runs nevertheless as fast as the original Puppy, which means that it runs very very fast!

COMPATIBLE WITH Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

PuppEX Jammy64 is compatible with Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish), which means that Ubuntu packages for Ubuntu 22.04 can be installed and used in PuppEX. You can use the Synaptic Package Manager or the apt command. (apt update, apt upgrade, apt install MyUsefulPackage etc).

IMPORTANT NOTE
: The normal remasterpup2 script (which is included in all Puppy Linux versions) doesn’t work in Puppy_Linux_vanillapup. I had to use my “special remaster tricks” to be able to build PuppEX Jammy64. I have therefore kept my two versions of PuppEX Focal64 20.04 in which the remasterpup2 script works very well. It works very well in PuppEX Slack64 15.0 too.

NOTE about VirtualBox: You can’t run this version of PuppEX in VirtualBox. PuppEX Jammy64 runs pretty well in Qemu in Linux though.

SCREENSHOTS

2. YouTube running
3. Netflix running
4. Showing a manual installation of PuppEX

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40), Kodi 19.4 and kernel 5.18.3-amd64-exton :: Build 220617

NEWS/CHANGES 220617
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Matrix 19.4 – latest version. Kodi is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. It is designed around a “10-foot user interface” for use with televisions and remote controls. Kodi runs very well in MeX. On a web site called FireStickTricks you can find instructions how to install 27 (?!) extra Kodi Builds with their own repositories and skins. The article is called Best Kodi Builds December 2022. I’ve tried Grindhouse today. Works very well. Otherwise MeX version 220617 works in the same way as previous versions.

NEWS/CHANGES 220617
Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX Build 220617 is based only on Debian Sid and Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. I have replaced the original kernel (5.15) with “my” special kernel 5.18.3-amd64-exton. All installed packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 220617. This version of MeX uses the Ubuntu Desktop Minimal. I.e. Gnome 40. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed in MeX Build 220617) to create your own installable Ubuntu Live DVD once you have installed MeX to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Ubuntu 22.04 LTS live system. When you start Refracta Snapshot it will look like this. You don’t even have to install MeX to hard drive before you can use the Refracta Snapshot. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Ubuntu system while running MeX from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO) will only take 10 – 30 min!

RaspEX Rpi4 based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS “Jammy Jellyfish” with LXDE, kernel 5.15.24-exton-v7l+, Raspotify, RealVNC, PuTTy, Samba and Bluetooth :: Build 220228

NEWS 220228 about RaspEX with LXDE based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish.
I have upgraded the whole system and replaced the old kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+ with kernel 5.15.24-exton-v7l+. RaspEX Build 220228 is a Linux ARM (32bit) system for Raspberry Pi 4 with 2GB/4GB/8GB RAM and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. It is based on Debian, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Linaro (Open Source software for ARM SoCs). Both Firefox and Chromium Browser are pre-installed. I have also installed Samba and RealVNC so you can connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network and/or control RaspEX on your Raspberry Pi 4 from your Windows computers with VNC Viewer and/or PuTTY (Telnet and SSH client). Furthermore some extra Network Tools, SMTube (YouTube browser which allows to browse, search and play YouTube videos), PulseAudio for better sound in YouTube and RaspotifyRaspotify is a Spotify Connect client for Raspbian on the Raspberry Pi that just works. Study all installed packages in RaspEX Build 220228.

Most IMPORTANT News/Changes in Build 220228
1. I have installed an old version of Chromium with DRM/Widevine support, which means that you can watch Netflix (and possibly also HBO, YouTube TV, Amazon Prime Video, etc.) using the Chromium Browser. I did that following the instructions here.
2. In this build of RaspEX you can also run Chromium/Firefox logged in as root. You will have sound, which you normally won’t have as root on Debian/Ubuntu systems.

RaspEX Rpi4 based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS “Jammy Jellyfish” with LXDE, kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+, Raspotify, RealVNC, PuTTy, Samba and Bluetooth :: Build 211221

NEWS 211221 about RaspEX with LXDE based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish.
I have upgraded the whole system and replaced the old kernel 5.4.83-exton-v7l+ with kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+. RaspEX Build 211221 is a Linux ARM system for Raspberry Pi 4 with 2GB/4GB/8GB RAM and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. It is based on Debian, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Linaro (Open Source software for ARM SoCs). Both Firefox and Midori Private Browser are pre-installed. Study all installed packages in RaspEX Build 211221.

More about RaspEX

RaspEX is a full Linux Desktop system with LXDE (an extremely fast-performing and energy-saving desktop environment) with many other useful programs pre-installed. Firefox is used as Web Browser and Synaptic as Package Manager. You can use Samba and RealVNC to connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network and/or control RaspEX on your Raspberry Pi 4 from your Windows computers with VNC Viewer and/or PuTTY (Telnet and SSH client). You can use Synaptic to install any extra packages you may need. For example LibreOffice. RaspEX uses Ubuntu’s software repositories so you can install thousands of extra packages if you want.

Kernels
Kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+ (for Rpi 4) and 5.10.87-exton-v7+ (for Rpi 3/2) are used in Build 211221.

Why shall I use RaspEX?
Eight Operating Systems are recommended by Raspberrypi.org. Among them Noobs, Raspbian (Debian Bullseye) and Snappy Ubuntu Core. RaspEX is faster (“fast as lightning”), more useful and more fun to use. (In my opinion). One member at this site thought that running RaspEX (for Raspberry Pi 2 Model B) was like running Raspberry Pi on “steroids“. If you use the new Raspberry Pi 4 RaspEX will run even faster!

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian “Sid” and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40) and kernel 5.15.5-exton – now also with Kodi 19.3 :: Build 211211

NEWS/CHANGES 211211
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Matrix 19.3 – latest version. I’ve tried Grindhouse today. Works very well. Watch this screenshot. And this. Otherwise MeX version 211211 works in the same way as version 211207.

NOTE though
Calamares Installer has been upgraded to 3.2.41.1. If you use it for installing MeX to hard drive you will notice that Calamares will be uninstalled afterwards. If you want to create your own Ubuntu ISO with Refracta Snapshot you should reinstall Calamares using Synaptic. For Calamares to work properly you must replace /usr/bin/calamares-logs-helper with this file.

ExTiX 21.11 – “The Ultimate Linux System” – based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with LXQt 0.17, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 5.14.12-exton-amd64 :: Build 211030

ExTiX 21.11 LXQt – Build 211030
I have made a new version of ExTiX – The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 21.11 LXQt Live DVD. (The previous LXQt version was 21.5 from 210516). ExTiX 21.11 is based on a pre-release (not even BETA) of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish)! Ubuntu 22.04 will be supported until 2027. The best thing with ExTiX 21.11 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! One other very good thing with this version of ExTiX is that it is quite light. The ISO file is of only 1580 MB, which means that you can run the system super fast from RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick. Use Boot alternative 3 or Advanced options… >> load to RAM.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since this version of ExTiX is based on a pre-release of Ubuntu you shouldn’t use it for sensitive work/business. Having said that I must also say that I haven’t found any “bugs” or so. Maybe it’s because ExTiX 21.11 uses the stable LXQt 0.17 DE (and not the more complicated Gnome DE or KDE DE).

ABOUT
ExTiX 21.11
LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian Sid and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. The original system includes the Desktop Environment Gnome. After removing Gnome I have installed LXQt 0.17. LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment. NOTE: This ExTiX LXQt Build is for installation to UEFI-enabled computers. You shall use Refracta Installer for that.

Used KERNEL
My special kernel 5.14.12-exton-amd64 with all Debian patches.

SCREENSHOTS
1. ExTiX LXQt – root’s Desktop
2. ExTiX LXQt – live’s Desktop
3. Using Refracta Installer – chroot for installing Grub
4. ExTiX 21.11 running in full screen in VirtualBox
