PuppEX Focal64 Linux Live DVD with kernel 5.16.2-exton and VirtualBox Guest Additions :: Build 220201

ABOUT PuppEX Focal64 Build 220201
This Puppy derivative is built from Puppy Linux 9.5 FossaPup64. I have added PCManFM and LXterminal. Also many development tools. Furthermore I have compiled a new kernel – 5.16.2-exton and pre-installed VirtualBox Guest Additions. Watch a screenshot when PuppEX is running in full screen in VirtualBox. PuppEX Focal64 (both versions) are compatible with Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa), which means that Ubuntu packages for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS can be installed and used in PuppEX. Ubuntu 20.04 LTS will be supported until April, 2025.

NOTE1: For some unknown reason PuppEX Build 220201 won’t boot on newer UEFI computers. It works well on older computer though. I have therefore kept the old PuppEX version from 201119, which can run on all “normal” computers.

NOTE1: The good thing about PuppEX Build 220201 is that you can run it very well on older non-UEFI computers, VirtualBox, VMware and Qemu. You can also do a manual installation to any computer provided that you have at least one Linux system installed and use Grub as bootloader. Do it like this.
1. Extract everything in the PuppEX ISO to a folder in the root (/) of your existing Linux system. Watch this screenshot.
2. Then just add boot lines for PuppEX in /etc/grub.d/40_custom or /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Watch this screenshot and this example of a 40_custom-configuration.
3. You can/should also read my instruction How to dual-boot, triple-boot or multi-boot Linux with Windows in a simple way and be happy...

SlackEX (Slackware) 15.0 RC3 (released 220113) with Enlightenment 0.25.1 (released 220103) respectively Xfce4 as an alternative DE, Refracta Installer and Refracta Snapshot (so you can create your own Slackware 15.0 system) ::: Build 220117

Slackware is the first widely-used Linux system, which is still developing. Slackware has existed since 1993. In comparison with for example Ubuntu and Linux Mint, many people believe that Slackware is “difficult”. Any novice can quickly learn to use Ubuntu they say. My remaster of Slackware Current (15.0), which I call SlackEX 15.0 Current 64 bit Linux Live DVD, is however just as easy to use as Ubuntu and/or Linux Mint. Some tend to complain that the Program Management in Slackware is awkward. That was perhaps earlier the case, but not anymore.

NEWS ABOUT SlackEX Build 220117 with the Enlightenment and Xfce4 Desktops
A new extra version of SlackEX is ready. It is based on Slackware 15.0 RC3 released 220113. In this version I’ve installed Enlightenment 0.25.1 – latest version and Xfce4. I’ve also replaced kernel 5.10.70-exton with kernel is 5.16.0-exton. This version of SlackEX is unique. You can’t find another Linux system with the latest Enlightenment version. When installing version 0.25.1 I had to do it from source. The whole thing was very time consuming since a lot of dependencies had to be satisfied. The most important package installed is Refracta Snapshot. With that you can build your own Slackware distribution with Enlightenment 0.25.1. When a new version of Enlightenment is ready you too should be able to install it from source. Xfce4 is one of Slackware’s official Desktop environments. The other one is KDE. You can easily switch from Enlightenment to Xfce4 by editing /root/.xinitrc. Watch this screenshot. Then log out and back again. That can of course also be done when running SlackEX live. (From a DVD or USB stick).  Study the full package LIST in SlackEX Build 220117. This Build of SlackEX replaces version 211014 (with Xfce4) and version 201112 (with Enlightenment). NOTE: You’ll run SlackEX Build 220117 as root. The password for root is root. If you don’t like to run a Linux system as root you can create a “normal” user. Watch this screenshot.

Why Slackware?
Slackware is grossly underestimated (in my opinion). This article give you ten (10) reasons to choose Slackware. And this article explains how Slackware works in 2021/2022.

ExTiX Deepin 22.1 Live based on Deepin 20.3 (latest) with Skype, Spotify, Refracta Snapshot and kernel 5.16.0-exton :: Build 220114

NEWS 220114 ABOUT ExTiX Deepin
I’ve released a new version of ExTiX Deepin today (220114). This ExTiX Build is based on Deepin 20.3 released by Deepin Technology 211123.

NEW FUNCTIONS etc

1. You can run ExTiX from RAM. Use boot alternative 2 (load to RAM) or Advanced. A wonderful way to run Linux if you have enough RAM. Everything will be super fast. When ExTiX has booted up you can remove the DVD or USB stick.
2. You will have the opportunity to choose language before you enter the Deepin 20.3 Desktop. All main languages are supported.
3. I have replaced Deepin Installer with the Reborn version of Deepin Installer. Works better in every way.
4. I have replaced kernel 5.14.2-exton with kernel 5.16.0-exton. Corresponding the latest available stable kernel from Kernel.org.
5. Spotify and Skype are pre-installed.
6. You can watch Netflix while running Firefox.
7. You can install ExTiX Deepin also in VirtualBox/VMware using Refracta Installer or Deepin Installer. (In previous versions you had to “chroot” into the install partition and install Grub).
8. As an alternative to Apt you can use the Cactus Package Manager. Example commands: cpm i mousepad and cpm s gimp. (Install Mousepad and search for Gimp). CPM works very well.
9. Install ExTiX to a USB stick preferably with Rufus 3.17 in Windows – see below how it looks.
10. In version 220114 I’ve also included Refracta Installer. Use it in VirtualBox if you want to have an exact copy of ExTiX Deepin installed. You don’t have to “chroot” to install Grub. Just choose to “Copy Grub files” when asked to. Watch this screenshot.
11. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. With those installed you can run ExTiX in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot.

UNIQUE
I may add that there is no other live version of Deepin 20.3.

SCREENSHOTS
1. ExTiX running in full screen in VirtualBox (VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed)
2. Spotify is running
3. Netflix is running in Firefox
4. ExTiX running in VMware Workstation Player in Windows in full screen after VMware Tools have been installed
5. ExTiX running in Qemu in Linux (Ubuntu). NOTE: ExTiX Deepin (and other Linux systems) runs very fast in Qemu (in Linux). Qemu is a generic and open source machine emulator and virtualizer. Superior to VirtualBox…

SlackEX (Slackware) 15.0 RC2 with LXQt, Refracta Installer and Refracta Snapshot (so you can create your own Slackware 15.0 system) ::: Build 220110

NEWS ABOUT SlackEX 15.0 RC2 with LXQT
Because I like Slackware so much I’ve made a new extra version of SlackEX 15.0 RC2. This time with LXQt as Desktop environment. LXQt is a lightweight Qt desktop environment. It will not get in your way. It will not hang or slow down your system. It is focused on being a classic desktop with a modern look and feel. LXQt is not included in Slackware’s repositories. I’ve built the LXQt packages following the instructions at Gitlab.com. If you already have Slackware/SlackEX installed to hard drive you can do the same. (If you want LXQt). It’s very easy if you have KDE installed. Otherwise you’ll have to install some KDE/LXQt dependencies. Not that difficult though. So SlackEX Build 220110 is a live remaster of Slackware 15.0 RC2. It was released 211118. You can install SlackEX to hard drive and also use Refracta Snapshot for creating your very own live installable Slackware 15.0 system. Kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21 is used. You can (of course) install Slackware’s latest kernel 5.15.13 if you want. But to be able to create your own Slackware 15.0 system you will have to use (boot up with) kernel 5-15-5-exton-amd64-rt21. Study all pre-installed packages in Build 220110…

Slackware is the first widely-used Linux system, which is still developing. Slackware has existed since 1993. In comparison with for example Ubuntu and Linux Mint, many people believe that Slackware is “difficult”. Any novice can quickly learn to use Ubuntu they say. My remasters of Slackware Current (15.0/14.2), which I call SlackEX 15.0/14.2/Current 64 bit Linux Live DVD, is however just as easy to use as Ubuntu and/or Linux Mint. Some tend to complain that the Program Management in Slackware is awkward. That was perhaps earlier the case, but not anymore.

NEW features in version 220110 of SlackEX
Kernel 5.15-5-exton-amd64-rt21 is used so that Refracta Snapshot can be used. Using Refracta Snapshot you can change everything and create your very own Slackware 15.0 system. Read more about Refracta Snapshot. LXQt is used as Desktop environment. Furthermore I have installed Grub2, which can be used as boot loader (if you want) after a hard drive install using Refracta Installer. A lot of other Slackware packages are pre-installed. Study the full package LIST. Log in to LXQt as the ordinary user user with password live or as root with password root. While running SlackEX LXQt in VirtualBox you can do so in full screen since VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed. Watch this screenshot. Also showing a Samba connection in VirtualBox.

CruxEX 2022 (CRUX 3.6.1) 64bit Linux Build 220104 – Install it to a USB Pen Drive and enjoy PERSISTENCE!

LATEST NEWS ABOUT CruxEX 220104
I have released a new version of CruxEX today. This version has VirtualBox Guest Additions pre-installed, which means (among other things) that you can run CruxEX in VirtualBox in full screen. Read about how to install and run CruxEX from a USB stick in VirtualBox. Watch a screenshot when CruxEX is running i VirtualBox in full screen. (Using VirtualBox Guest Additions).

CruxEX 2022 64 bit Linux Live USB is based on CRUX 3.6.1 (latest version, released 201212), which is all Linux enthusiasts/nerds favorite OS. (CRUX is a lightweight Linux distribution for the x86_64 architecture targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is keep it simple, which is reflected in a straightforward tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style initscripts, and a relatively small collection of trimmed packages. The secondary focus is utilization of new Linux features and recent tools and libraries. CRUX also has a ports system which makes it easy to install and upgrade applications). CruxEX 3.6.1 2022 uses the LXDE Desktop environment. I have replaced the original CRUX kernel 5.10 with “my” special kernel 5.15.12-exton-amd64, with support for “extra everything”.

Replacement
My first remaster of CRUX 3.6.1 is from 201223. Now (220104) I have upgraded all included packages and replaced kernel 5.9.15-exton with kernel 5.15.12-exton-amd64. Study the most important upgraded packages.

Kernel and installed packages
Kernel 5.15.12 is the latest available stable kernel as of 220104. Among all installed and updated applications are Firefox, Google Chrome (for Netflix), GParted, PCManFM, Pulseaudio, Slim Login Manager, Gimp and NetworkManager. Furthermore compilation tools so that you can install programs from source. Note: Google Chrome is not in CRUX repositories. Nvidia Graphics Driver 470.94 is pre-installed. It will be automatically used if your computer has support for it. Furthermore I’ve installed VirtualBox Guest Additions so that you can run CruxEX in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot.

Unique
CruxEX 3.6.1 2022 build 220104 is – as my previous CRUX-remasters – unique in the world. I.e. there is no other CRUX Live CD/USB (as far as I know). In any case, not for downloading. The good thing with CruxEX is that it is a live system (which CRUX original isn’t) and that you can run CruxEX super fast from RAM. Also that you can install CruxEX to hard drive in about 5 minutes and then have a ready-to-go CRUX desktop system. You can after that install any (extra) desktop environment you like. NOTE: You can (of course) install new Desktops environments and other stuff also when running CruxEX from a USB stick – PERSISTENCE! Note also: To make CRUX original ready for everyday use will normally take 2 – 3 days!

SCREENSHOTS

2. The LXDE Desktop for root
3. Prt-get in action

4. CruxEX running from USB in VirtualBox
5. The USB live boot screen

RaspEX Rpi4 based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS “Jammy Jellyfish” with LXDE, kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+, Raspotify, RealVNC, PuTTy, Samba and Bluetooth :: Build 211221

NEWS 211221 about RaspEX with LXDE based on upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Jammy Jellyfish.
I have upgraded the whole system and replaced the old kernel 5.4.83-exton-v7l+ with kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+. RaspEX Build 211221 is a Linux ARM system for Raspberry Pi 4 with 2GB/4GB/8GB RAM and Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B or Raspberry Pi 2 Model B. It is based on Debian, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Linaro (Open Source software for ARM SoCs). Both Firefox and Midori Private Browser are pre-installed. I have also installed Samba and RealVNC so you can connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network and/or control RaspEX on your Raspberry Pi 4 from your Windows computers with VNC Viewer and/or PuTTY (Telnet and SSH client). Furthermore some extra Network Tools, SMTube (YouTube browser which allows to browse, search and play YouTube videos), PulseAudio for better sound in YouTube and RaspotifyRaspotify is a Spotify Connect client for Raspbian on the Raspberry Pi that just works. Study all installed packages in RaspEX Build 211221.

More about RaspEX

RaspEX is a full Linux Desktop system with LXDE (an extremely fast-performing and energy-saving desktop environment) with many other useful programs pre-installed. Firefox is used as Web Browser and Synaptic as Package Manager. You can use Samba and RealVNC to connect to your Windows computers in your Home Network and/or control RaspEX on your Raspberry Pi 4 from your Windows computers with VNC Viewer and/or PuTTY (Telnet and SSH client). You can use Synaptic to install any extra packages you may need. For example LibreOffice. RaspEX uses Ubuntu’s software repositories so you can install thousands of extra packages if you want.

Kernels
Kernel 5.10.87-exton-v7l+ (for Rpi 4) and 5.10.87-exton-v7+ (for Rpi 3/2) are used in Build 211221.

Why shall I use RaspEX?
Eight Operating Systems are recommended by Raspberrypi.org. Among them Noobs, Raspbian (Debian Bullseye) and Snappy Ubuntu Core. RaspEX is faster (“fast as lightning”), more useful and more fun to use. (In my opinion). One member at this site thought that running RaspEX (for Raspberry Pi 2 Model B) was like running Raspberry Pi on “steroids“. If you use the new Raspberry Pi 4 RaspEX will run even faster!

DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment – Build 211215 – with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40, Enlightenment 0.24.2, penguins-eggs (remaster tool) and kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21

About DebEX Barebone Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment, DebEX Gnome and DebEX KDE Plasma Linux 64 bit
All three systems/distributions are based on Debian. Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40 and Enlightenment 0.24.2 are used as Desktop environments in DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment Build 211215. Gnome 3.38 is used in DebEX Gnome. KDE Plasma Desktop 5:20 is used in DebEX KDE. The system language is English (in all three versions of DebEX).

NEWS 211215 about DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment – a penguins-eggs Build
A new version of DebEX – based on Debian Sid (unstable) – with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Gnome 40, Enlightenment 0.24.2 and kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21 is ready. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of December 15, 2021.

Most important Changes
When you start up DebEX Build 211215 live (from a DVD or a USB stick) you will end up logged in as the ordinary user user to the Budgie Desktop. The password for user is live. You can log out from Budgie and log in again to Gnome or Enlightenment. You can also log in from LightDM as root (super admin). The password for root is root. NOTE: You can’t log in to the Enlightenment Desktop when running DebEX Build 211215 in VirtualBox or VMware. You can use the Calamares 3.2.48-1 Installer Framework to install DebEX Budgie/Gnome/Enlightenment to your computer in any language. You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. Watch this animated GIF. My other DebEX builds were created with Refracta Snapshot. This DebEX Build (211215) is, however, created with a remaster tool called penguins-eggs. Very easy to handle. Penguins-eggs is a console utility, in active development, who let you to remaster your system and redistribute it as iso images or from the lan via PXE remote boot. You can use penguins-eggs in any Debian/Ubuntu system installed to hard drive. Basically you only need to start up a terminal and run the command sudo eggs dad -c. Then just follow the instructions – see the screenshots below. If you haven’t installed Calamares you will be asked to do so. Do that even if you already have Calamares installed. A system/ISO built with penguins-eggs must use a special Calamares version to be installable. Penguins-eggs is developed by Piero Proietti. It is based on Remastersys, Refracta, Systemback and father Knoppix.

How-to use penguins-eggs
1. Install DebEX (or any other Debian/Ubuntu based system) to hard drive
2. Change everything to your liking
3. Open up a terminal and run the command sudo eggs dad -c
Screenshot 1NOTE: If you choose fast your new ISO will be ready in about five minutes (even in VirtualBox). If you choose max it will take about two hours (in VirtualBox), but the ISO will be about 500 MB smaller. (As regards new builds of DebEX Build 211215). A smaller ISO has one disadvantage. It doesn’t boot as fast as the one built using the option fast.

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian “Sid” and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40) and kernel 5.15.5-exton – now also with Kodi 19.3 :: Build 211211

NEWS/CHANGES 211211
I’ve uploaded a new version of MeX, in which I’ve included Kodi Matrix 19.3 – latest version. Kodi is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub that can be installed on Linux, OSX, Windows, iOS, tvOS and Android. It is designed around a “10-foot user interface” for use with televisions and remote controls. Kodi runs very well in MeX. On a web site called FireStickTricks you can find instructions how to install 27 (?!) extra Kodi Builds with their own repositories and skins. The article is called Best Kodi Builds December 2021. I’ve tried Grindhouse today. Works very well. Watch this screenshot. And this. Otherwise MeX version 211211 works in the same way as version 211207.

NOTE though
Calamares Installer has been upgraded to 3.2.41.1. If you use it for installing MeX to hard drive you will notice that Calamares will be uninstalled afterwards. If you want to create your own Ubuntu ISO with Refracta Snapshot you should reinstall Calamares using Synaptic. For Calamares to work properly you must replace /usr/bin/calamares-logs-helper with this file.

MeX 64 bit Linux based on Debian “Sid” and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Ubuntu Desktop (Gnome 40) and kernel 5.15.5-exton :: Build 211207

NEWS/CHANGES 211207
Mex Linux is no longer based on Linux Mint. MeX Build 211207 is based only on Debian Sid and upcoming Ubuntu 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish. I have replaced the original kernel (5.13) with “my” special kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21. All installed packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 211207. This version of MeX uses the Ubuntu Desktop Minimal. I.e. Gnome 40. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.

MORE MeX NEWS 211207
1. The MeX ISO is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive.
2. Another big improvement is that MeX now can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 2 (load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can eject the disc (DVD)/USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run MeX that way. The ISO file is of only 1400 MB so MeX will run super fast from RAM!
3. I have replaced Google Chrome with Firefox. Google Chrome is no longer needed to be able to run Netflix in Linux.
4. The best thing with this new MeX build – Create your own installable Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Live DVD with Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed)! The whole “remaster process” is so simple that a 10 year old child can do it.
5. I have installed Calamares Installer as in many of my other Linux builds. Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. Very easy to use. You can use Calamares to install MeX on both UEFI computers and non UEFI computers (for example VirtualBox and VMware).
6. VirtualBox Guest Additions are pre-installed so you can run MeX in full screen in VirtualBox. Watch this screenshot.

Who can benefit from MeX?
All who like Debian/Ubuntu and want a system that is easy to use and maintain. And of course those who want to create their own Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system in a very simple way with Refracta Snapshot. Regarding MeX also those who want to run a Linux system super fast from RAM and/or like to run Linux from a USB flash drive. And those who want a new kernel – 5.15.5 and be among the very first people to have Ubuntu 22.04 LTS stable installed in April 2022.

ExLight 64bit UEFI, Build 211130, based on Debian Sid (unstable/development) with Enlightenment 0.24.2, Refracta Snapshot, Calamares and kernel 5.15.5-exton

NEWS 211130 ABOUT ExLight
I’ve made a new version of ExLight with the Enlightenment 0.24.2 Desktop environment, Refracta Snapshot (create your own Debian Sid System) and Calamares 3.2.44.3-1 Installer Framework. The very nice Enlightenment theme R-Matrix-2.0 is used. It will be used also after a hard drive installation.

New sources 211130
This new version of ExLight is based on Debian Sid (unstable/development). Build 211130 is a total rebuild of ExLight. The ISO file size is of only 1460 MB, which means that ExLight now can run even faster from RAM. I.e. load to RAM – screenshot. You can remove the DVD or USB stick when ExLight has booted – watch this screenshot.

KERNEL
ExLight Build 211130 uses kernel 5.15.5-exton-amd64-rt21, corresponding Kernel.org‘s latest stable kernel 5.15.5.

What’s new in kernel 5.15 LTS?

THE REAL McCoy
ExLight is a pure Debian system. I.e. no traces of Ubuntu, Kubuntu etc. New releases of Ubuntu are always based on Debian. So is ExLight.

SCREENSHOTS

1. The Enlightenment 0.24.2 Desktop for user user
2. The Enlightenment 0.24.2 Desktop for root running Calamares
