Exton|OS 64 bit – based on Ubuntu 19.04 – with Budgie Desktop 10.5, Refracta Snapshot, Calamares Installer and kernel 5.1.3-exton – Build 190521

NEWS 190521 ABOUT Exton|OS with Budgie Desktop 10.5 and Refracta Snapshot
The Desktop Environment in this Exton|OS build is Budgie 10.5. (Budgie is focused on simplicity an elegance. Designed with the modern user in mind). Program content in build 190521: Refracta Snapshot, Calamares 3.2.4, Firefox, Gimp, SMPlayer, SMTube, and GParted. Also all necessary additions in order to install programs from source. Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. Kernel 5.1.3-exton (corresponding Kernel.org‘s latest kernel 5.1.3) is used. You can download “my” kernel and install it in newer Ubuntu/Debian systems (if you want). All packages have been updated to the latest available version as at May 21, 2019 Study the NEW PACKAGE list. Google Chrome has been removed since it’s now possible to use Netflix in Firefox. Using Refracta Snapshot you can change everything to your liking and create your own live installable Ubuntu system. I mean create your own installable Ubuntu 19.04 Live DVD once you have installed Exton|OS to hard drive.

MOST IMPORTANT CHANGES IN BUILD 190521
1. This Exton|OS version is for non-efi computers, which means that you can use the Calamares Installer in VirtualBox/VMware and thus install Exton|OS in any language. You can even use Calamares for installation to a USB stick and that way get persistence. Please read my instruction before you perform such an installation. Calamares Installer replaces Ubiquity (Ubuntu’s installer). Calamares Installer is also very simple to use. No “expert knowledge” is needed.
2. A brand new kernel – 5.1.3 – is used.
3. The very nice icon theme Papirus is installed and used.
I haven’t changed the wallpapers since it’s hard to find nicer ones.

WHAT’S NEW in kernel 5.1?

PuppEX Bionic 64 bit, uefi, compatible with Ubuntu 18.04 :: Build 190331

NEWS 190331
Yesterday I released my first version of PuppEX Bionic64. After that I have discovered a way to install and run Spotify in PuppEX. So now you can run YouTube, Netflix and Spotify in the new PuppEX version of 190331. What more can one wish for?

ABOUT PuppEX Bionic Build 190330
My newest Puppy derivative is built from Puppy Linux 8.0 BionicPup 64 bit. I have added Google Chrome (for Netflix), PCManFM, LXTerminal and many development tools. I have also compiled a new kernel – 5.0.5-puppex. Kernel 5.0.5 is the latest stable kernel available from Kernel.org as of 190330. Furthermore I have installed Nvidia’s Proprietary Graphics driver 418.56. The Nvidia driver will be used if your computer/card is “good/modern” enough. If not automatically just open up a terminal and run the command nvidia-xconfig. Then restart X. Note: Firefox can’t be used in Puppy Linux. You won’t have sound.

PuppEX Bionic64 is compatible with Ubuntu 18.04, which means that Ubuntu packages for Ubuntu 18.04 can be installed and used in PuppEX. The PuppEX Bionic ISO is of 827 MB.

Performance
Puppy Bionic64 original is of only 354 MB. PuppEX Bionic64 is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems. (Puppy/PuppEX runs from RAM).

Study ALL installed packages in PuppEX Bionic64

ExTiX 19.1.2, Build 190102, with LXQt 0.12, Kodi 18 “Leia”, Refracta Snapshot, Nvidia and kernel 4.20.0-exton

NEWS 190104 ABOUT ExTiX LXQt Mini 19.1.3, Build 190104
I’ve made a new “mini” version of ExTiX. The ISO file is now only of 837 MB, which is good if you want to run the system superfast from RAM. This build has everything Build 19.1.2 has except for Kodi 18. You can, however, install Kodi 18 “Leia” if you want. Use Synaptic for that. Watch this screenshot. You can (of course) install thousands of other packages if you want. Study all pre-installed packages in ExTiX 19.1.3.

ExTiX 19.1.2 – Build 190102
I have made a new version of ExTiX – The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 19.1.2 LXQt/Kodi Live DVD. (The previous LXQt version was 18.7 from 180723). The best thing with ExTiX 19.1.2 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system. So easy that a ten year child can do it! As an alternative to LXQt you can run Kodi 18 Leia. Just start Kodi like any other program while logged in to the LXQt Desktop as the ordinary user live. I have enabled a few addons in Kodi. Most important the Netflix addon. One other very good thing with this version of ExTiX is that it is very light. The ISO file is of only 1040 MB, which means that you can run the system superfast from RAM. When the boot process is ready you can eject the DVD or USB stick. Use Boot alternative 3 or Advanced options… >> load to RAM.

ABOUT
ExTiX 19.1.2
LXQt/Kodi DVD 64 bit is based on Debian and Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS. The original system includes the Desktop Environment Gnome. After removing Gnome I have installed LXQt 0.12.0. LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment. I have also installed Kodi 18 Leia with some addons already enabled. Most important Netflix, Plex and Amazon Video addons. NOTE: This ExTiX LXQt Build is for installation to UEFI-enabled computers. You shall use Refracta Installer for that.

The system language is ENGLISH.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL about ExTiX and especially the new version from 190102?
1. The ExTiX ISO’s are ISO-hybrids, which means that they can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can even run ExTiX from the USB stick and save all your system changes on the stick. I.e. you will enjoy persistence!
2. Another big improvement is that both ExTiX versions can run from RAM. Use Boot alternative 3 (load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run ExTiX that way. Running from RAM means that the system will run faster than from a DVD or a USB stick. Everything will be superfast I would say! Especially since the ISO file is of only 1040 MB!
3. ExTiX LXQt is now more stable than ever. All packages have been upgraded to the latest version by 190102.
4. I’ve replaced kernel 4.18.0-rc5-extix with kernel 4.20.0-exton. Kernel 4.20 is the latest kernel by 190102.
5. I have replaced Ubuntu’s installation program Ubiquity (live installer) with Refracta Installer. It works very well. I.e. a new user (your user) will be created during the installation process and you’ll get a chance to change root’s password. Just start the installer from the menu under System.
6. The best thing with ExTiX 19.1.2 is that while running the system live (from DVD/USB) or from hard drive you can use Refracta Snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system.
7. As an alternative to LXQt you can run Kodi 18 Leia. Just start Kodi like any other program while logged in to the LXQt Desktop as the ordinary user live. I have enabled a few addons in Kodi. Most important the Netflix addon. NOTE: You can’t run Kodi as root. (You won’t have sound).
8. Nvidia proprietary Graphics driver 410.78 (patched for kernel 4.20) is pre-installed in ExTiX 19.1.2. It will be used automatically if your computer has support for it.

ExTiX 18.10 – based on Ubuntu 18.10 “Cosmic Cuttlefish” – with LXQt 0.13.0, Refracta Tools, Calamares Installer and kernel 4.18.12-exton – a non-efi Build 181006

I have made a new extra version of ExTiX – The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 18.10 LXQt Live DVD. It is for non-efi computers and VirtualBox/VMware. I.e. you can use the Calamares Installer also in for example VirtualBox and VMware. Which means that you can install ExTiX in any language.

ABOUT
ExTiX 18.10
LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian and upcoming Ubuntu 18.10 Cosmic Cuttlefish (to be released 181018). The original system includes the Desktop Environment Gnome. After removing Gnome I have installed LXQt 0.13.0. LXQt is the Qt port and the upcoming version of LXDE, the Lightweight Desktop Environment. It is the product of the merge between the LXDE-Qt and the Razor-qt projects: A lightweight, modular, blazing-fast and user-friendly desktop environment. NOTE: This ExTiX LXQt Build is for installation to non UEFI-enabled computers and VirtualBox/VMware.

The system language is ENGLISH.

Used KERNEL
My special kernel 4.18.12-exton corresponding Kernel.org’s latest stable kernel 4.18.12. You can download “my” kernel if you want to use it another Ubuntu/Debian system.

What’s new in kernel 4.18?

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL about ExTiX and especially the new version from 181006?
Use Boot alternative 4 (Load to RAM). When the system has booted up you can remove the disc (DVD) or USB stick. You’ll need at least 2 GB RAM to run ExTiX that way. Running from RAM means that the system will run faster than from DVD or USB stick. Everything will be superfast I would say!
3. All packages have been upgraded to the latest version by 181006.
4. You can install that you can install Nvidia’s proprietary graphics driver (without problems) if you like.
5. You can install ExTiX to hard drive using Calamares Installer on older non-efi computers (and VirtualBox/VMware). Which means that you can install ExTiX in your preferred language.
6. While running ExTiX LXQt 18.10 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta snapshot (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system. A ten year child can do it!

THE IMPORTANCE of ExTiX LXQt now being based on Ubuntu 18.10 (UNSTABLE/DEVELOPMENT)
I don’t think it is too important since ExTiX LXQt doesn’t use complicated Desktop Environments like KDE, Gnome or Unity. Programs won’t crash or anything like that. And I haven’t discovered any bugs to report.

CruxEX (CRUX 3.4), 64bit, live USB with LXDE, Google Chrome (for Netflix), Spotify and kernel 4.18.7-exton – Build 180912

CruxEX 3.4 64 bit Linux Live USB is based on CRUX 3.4 (latest version, released 180512), which is all Linux enthusiasts/nerds favorite OS. (CRUX is a lightweight Linux distribution for the x86_64 architecture targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is keep it simple, which is reflected in a straightforward tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style initscripts, and a relatively small collection of trimmed packages. The secondary focus is utilization of new Linux features and recent tools and libraries. CRUX also has a ports system which makes it easy to install and upgrade applications). CruxEX 3.4 2018 uses the LXDE Desktop environment. I have replaced the original CRUX kernel 4.14.20 with “my” special kernel 4.18.7-exton, with support for “extra everything”.

NEWS 180912
CruxEX 2018 is distributed only as a Zip file. Install my new version of CruxEX 3.4 64bit from 180912 to a USB Pen Drive and run the system superfast from RAM – read this INSTRUCTION. If you later on decide you want to install CruxEX to hard drive from the USB Pen Drive all your system changes will also be installed to the hard drive. NOTE: Unfortunately persistence can’t be enabled anymore while running CruxEX from a USB stick.

About CruxEX 3.4 version 180912
All packages have been upgraded to the latest available version (with prt-get sysup). Furthermore: This version uses kernel 4.18.7 released 180909! And of course Google Chrome for Netflix!

Whats new in kernel 4.18?

Unique
CruxEX 3.4 2018 build 180912 is – as my previous CRUX-remasters – unique in the world. I.e. there is no other CRUX Live CD/USB (as far as I know). In any case, not for downloading. The good thing with CruxEX is that it is a live system (which CRUX original isn’t) and that you can run CruxEX superfast from RAM. Also that you can install CruxEX to hard drive in about 5 min and then have a ready-to-go CRUX desktop system. You can after that install any (extra) desktop environment you like.

DebEX KDE/Plasma with Plasma 5:47, Refracta tools, Calamares Installer and kernel 4.18.0-rc8-exton – Build 180814

ABOUT DebEX
All three DebEX systems/distributions are a based on
Debian Buster/Sid (upcoming Debian 10). Budgie Desktop 10.4 is used as Desktop environment in DebEX Barebone/Budgie. Gnome 3.26 and Mate 1.18 are used in DebEX Gnome. KDE Plasma Desktop 5:47 is used in DebEX KDE. The system language is English (in all three versions of DebEX).

NEWS 180814 about DebEX KDE Plasma – a Refracta Build
I have made two new versions of DebEX KDE Plasma Live DVD – one efi and one non-efi version. They replace version 180221. It’s a pure Debian system. (Unstable/Experimental). I.e.: There are no Ubuntu or Kubuntu elements involved. DebEX KDE Plasma uses the KDE Plasma Desktop 5:47 as Desktop environment. Both versions use kernel 4.18.0-rc8-exton – (4.18-rc8). I have replaced Wicd with NetworkManager. It works better. I have replaced Google Chrome with Iceweasel (Firefox) 52.9 (for Netflix). I’ve also added SMPlayer – an alternative to Vlc. (SMPlayer is a free media player for Windows and Linux with built-in codecs that can play virtually all video and audio formats. It doesn’t need any external codecs. Just install SMPlayer and you’ll be able to play all formats without the hassle to find and install codec packs). All other installed packages have also been updated to the latest version of 180814. Study the full package list. MOST IMPORTANT CHANGES: I have replaced Refracta Installer with Calamares 3.2.1 Installer Framework. Now you can choose language when the installation starts. When it’s ready everything will be in your chosen language! You can even use Calamares in VirtualBox and VMware – i.e. non-efi computers. Then download and run debex-64bit-plasma-refracta-calamares-non-efi-1210mb-180814.iso. Watch a movie about the Calamares installation process of DebEX KDE in VirtualBox. You can use Calamares to install DebEX KDE on all non-efi computers without problems. VirtualBox and VMware are like non-efi computers.

MOVIE about Calamares Installer
Watch a movie
about the Calamares installation process in VirtualBox.

Important about Refracta
You can use the Refracta tools (pre-installed in all three versions of DebEX) to create your own installable Debian Live DVD once you have installed DebEX to hard drive. I mean change everything and then create a whole new Debian live system. When you start Refracta it will look like this. You don’t even have to install DebEX to hard drive before you can use the Refracta tools. If you have plenty of RAM you can create a new (your own!) Debian system while running DebEX from DVD or a USB stick. Please note that the whole Refracta process (creating your new ISO) will only take 10 – 50 min! You’ll find the ISO in /home/debex.

Why two versions of DebEX KDE?
The thing is that the packages grub-pc and grub-efi-amd64 can’t be installed at the same time. To be able to use Calamares Installer on non-efi computers grub-pc has to be installed.

NEWS about ExTiX 18.8 Deepin 180807
I’ve released a new version of ExTiX 18.8 Deepin today with Calamares 3.1.12 and kernel 4.18.0-rc5-extix. Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. All packages have been updated to the latest available version as of today. Study all installed packages in ExTiX Deepin Build 180807. ExTiX is based on Debian and Ubuntu 18.04.1.

About ExTiX 18.8 with the Deepin 15.5 Desktop
I’ve made a new extra version of ExTiX with Deepin 15.5 Desktop (made in China!). Deepin is devoted to providing a beautiful, easy to use, safe and reliable system for global users. Only a minimum of packages are installed in ExTiX Deepin. You can of course install all packages you want. Even while running ExTiX Deepin live. I.e. from a DVD or USB stick. Study all installed packages in ExTiX Deepin.

Refracta Tools
While running ExTiX Deepin 18.8 live or from hard drive you can use Refracta Tools (pre-installed) to create your own live installable Ubuntu system. A ten year child can do it!

About Calamares Installer
Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases. Calamares aims to be easy, usable, beautiful, pragmatic, inclusive and distribution-agnostic. Calamares includes an advanced partitioning feature, with support for both manual and automated partitioning operations. It is the first installer with an automated “Replace Partition” option, which makes it easy to reuse a partition over and over for distribution testing. Watch a movie when I’ve started to install ExTiX Deepin using Calamares. See also a slideshow below showing the whole Calamares install process.

Using Calamares you can choose language when the installation starts. When it’s ready everything will be in your chosen language!

Used KERNEL

My special kernel 4.18.0-rc5-extix+ corresponding Kernel.org’s kernel 4.18-rc5. You can download “my” kernel if you want to use it another Ubuntu/Debian system. My kernel is patched so that you can install Nvidia’s proprietary graphics driver if you like.

ExTiX 18.7 – “The Ultimate Linux System” – with LXQt 0.12.0, Refracta Tools, Calamares Installer and kernel 4.18.0-rc5-extix – Build 180723

I have made a new version of ExTiX – The Ultimate Linux System. I call it ExTiX 18.7 LXQt Live DVD. (The previous version was 18.4 from 180419).

ABOUT

LXQt DVD 64 bit is based on Debian 9 Stretch and Ubuntu 18.04.1 Bionic Beaver.

The system language is ENGLISH.

Used KERNEL
My special kernel 4.18.0-rc5-extix corresponding Kernel.org’s unstable kernel 4.18-rc5. You can download “my” kernel if you want to use it another Ubuntu/Debian system.

What’s new in kernel 4.18?

NEWS ABOUT ExTiX 18.7 Build 180723 with the LXQt Desktop environment
1. ExTiX LXQt is based on Ubuntu 18.04.1 Bionic Beaver. LXQt 0.12.0 is used as Desktop environment. All packages have been updated to the latest version by 180723. Kernel 4.18.0-rc5-extix is used. (Kernel.org‘s kernel 4.18-rc5).
2. Firefox has replaced Google Chrome as Web Browser. It’s now possible to watch Netflix movies also in Firefox (while running Linux).
3. I have replaced Ubuntu’s installer Ubiquity with Calamares Installer. Calamares is an installer framework. By design it is very customizable, in order to satisfy a wide variety of needs and use cases.
4. Other included important/useful packages are: LibreOffice, Thunderbird, GParted, Brasero, SMPlayer, GCC and other compilation tools so that you can install packages from source. Furthermore “all” multimedia codecs. Everything the average Linux user could wish for I would say.

WHAT’S SO SPECIAL about ExTiX and especially the new version from 180723?
3. All packages have been upgraded to the latest version by 180419.
4. I’ve replaced kernel 4.16.2-exton with kernel 4.18.0-rc5-extix (Kernel.org‘s unstable kernel 4.18-rc5). “My” kernel is patched so that you can install Nvidia’s proprietary graphics driver if you like.
